Software giant Microsoft has teamed up with Andhra Pradesh government to help the state deliver low cost internet connectivity in rural areas through unused TV spectrum. It is the first initiative of its kind in India. Microsoft will start the project from Srikakulam district. The company has already implemented the project on a pilot basis in many foreign countries ie Singapore, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana, Namibia and Tanzania.
Microsoft is going to use a technology known as TV White Space, which helps to address last-mile connectivity challenges. The other advantages are this technology can be also used during emergencies and disasters. The facility offered by Microsoft dynamically allocates unused TV spectrum for internet broadband transmission without disrupting the regular TV transmissions. The minimum range TV White Space is 10 km.
The Microsoft, DEITY, ERNET and DOT are together working with the Andhra Pradesh State Government.
