Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers retire from international cricket

Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers made an emotional farewell to international cricket after helping Australia win the fifth and final Ashes Test against England at The Oval.

Rogers scored five centuries in his 25-Test career while Clarke played almost 400 matches across all formats for Australia, after making his international debut more than 12 years ago. Rogers, who was named Australia’s Player of the Series after averaging almost 43 at the top of the order, said: “I’m pretty sad actually. I don’t usually get emotional and this is a sad moment but also one to enjoy.

Clarke’s 115-Test career finished when Australia clinched an innings and 46-run win over England in the Ashes dead rubber. Cricket has been at the centre of Clarke’s life since childhood with notable landmarks coming in 2004 and 2011. Clarke made a stellar Test debut 11 years ago, while he was handed the one-day and Test captaincy after Ricky Ponting’s resignation after the 2011 World Cup.

The shock death of close friend Phillip Hughes last November rocked Clarke and continues to do so. Clarke donned his black armband with the initials ‘PH’ during the fifth Ashes Test. Clarke wished his successor Steve Smith all the best and said he was confident Australian cricket is in good hands.
