Mehbooba Mufti sworn in as Jammu and Kashmir’s First Woman CM

Mehbooba MuftiMehbooba Mufti, president of the Peoples Democratic Party, took the oath as the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. A leader with grassroots-level popularity, Mehbooba Mufti turned Peoples Democratic Party into a regional force and emerged from the shadow of her illustrious father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to head Jammu and Kashmir, the first woman Chief Minister of the state.

  • A law graduate, 56-year-old Ms. Mufti took a plunge into mainstream politics of the state in 1996 by joining Congress, along with her father, at a time when militancy was at its peak.
  • Heading a PDP-BJP government formed with an alliance between two idealogical extremes, Ms. Mufti faces a challenging task ahead as she will strive to carry forward her father’s ’healing touch’ legacy.
  • J & K slipped into the governor’s rule immediately after sitting Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed’s demise on January 7.
  • The PDP-BJP stalemate ended only after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ms. Mufti on March 23.

State elections in December 2014 gave no party a majority in the 70 member J&K assembly. The PDP had won 28 seats and the BJP 25.
