India’s five-time world boxing champion MC Mary Kom has announced that she has made up her mind to hang up her gloves after the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Mary Kom, who attended the 125th foundation day celebrations of Nepali Girls’ Higher Secondary school, said it was the right time to quit boxing even though winning a gold medal at Olympics remains her dream.
Mary Kom, who had bagged bronze in the flyweight (51kg) category at the 2012 London Olympics, had earlier said that it would be an uphill task to achieve a podium-finish at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next year.

- She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships.
- She is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category and winning the bronze medal.
- She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea.
- She was awarded with Padma Shree, Padma Bhusan, Arjuna, and also Rajiv Gandhi Ghel Ratna Awards.
- In March 2015, the central government appointed Mary Kom as Brand Ambassador of North-east.
