Sikkim CM Pawan Chamling conferred with Yug Kavi Siddhicharan Award

Sikkim chief minister Pawan Chamling was conferred the ‘Yug Kavi Siddhicharan Award’ by Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli for his commendable contributions in promoting Nepali literature in India. Siddhicharan Shrestha Academy organised an event in Kathmandu on the occasion of 105th birth anniversary of the late poet Shrestha. The award carries a certificate of appreciation and a sum of NRs 100,000. Chamling, 65, was not present to receive the award. He has been awarded twice by the Sikkim Sahitya Parishad – Chintan Puraskar in 1987 for the best poem and Bhanu Puraskar in 2010.

Mukesh Ambani awarded with Othmer Gold Medal for Entrepreneurial Leadership

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani has been awarded with the prestigious Othmer Gold Medal for his entrepreneurial leadership by the United States based Chemical Heritage Foundation. Ambani was presented the award by Carsten Reinhardt, President & CEO of Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) during the occasion of the Heritage Day of CHF at Philadelphia, United States of America.

SK Sharma appointed CMD of Nuclear Power Corporation of India

Eminent scientist SK Sharma has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), responsible for design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear power reactors. He is presently working as Distinguished Scientist and Director (Operations) in NPCIL. Sharma has been appointed to the new post for a period of five years.

  • It is wholly owned by the Central Government and is responsible for the generation of nuclear power forelectricity. NPCIL is administered by the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India (DAE).

Lt General Saini new commandant of Indian Military Academy

Lt General S K Saini has taken over as the new commandant of prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA). Lt General Saini assumed the office of commandant on May 21. Earlier, he was a senior directing staff in National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi, according to press release issued by IMA. Lt General Saini is an alumni of National Defence Academy (NDA) and IMA. In 1981, he was commissioned to seventh battalion of Jat regiment. In his career of 36 years, he has held many important posts.

Rakesh Kumar Mishra appointed Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology

Rakesh Kumar Mishra, a noted expert in the study of function of genes, has been appointed as the new Director of the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Mishra had joined CCMB in 2001 as a senior scientist after stints at the IISc, Bangalore, the University of Bordeaux, France, Saint Louise University, USA and the University of Geneva, Switzerland for post-doctoral experience.

World Bank Group launched Pandemic Emergency Financing Facility

The World Bank Group has launched the much anticipated Pandemic Emergency Finance Facility (PEF) — a new financing mechanism to quickly mobilise funds to tackle global disease outbreaks and create a new insurance market for pandemic risk. PEF is expected to bring the much needed coordination and speed for future global disease outbreak response efforts. The PEF facility launch announcement came few days ahead of the May 26-27 Summit of Group of Seven Leaders in Ise-Shima, Japan. G7 leaders had urged the World Bank Group to develop the initiative during their May 2015 summit in Schloss-Elmau, Germany. Japan — which holds the G7 Presidency — became the first donor to the PEF initiative and committed $ 50 million.

INS Tarmugli Joins the Indian Navy

The Indian Navy has commissioned the highly maneuverable Fast Attack Craft INS Tarmugli at the hands of Vice Admiral HCS Bisht AVSM, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command at a formal ceremony held at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam. INS Tarmugli is being based in Visakhapatnam under the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Andhra Pradesh) and would be deployed for coastal patrol and surveillance operations along the East Coast of India.

  • Built by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), INS Tarmugli is the first Follow-on Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC), is an improved version of WJFAC, earlier constructed by GRSE.
  • Named after a picturesque island in the Andaman group, the 320-tonne INS Tarmugli, measuring 48 meters in length, can achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots.

Gujarat Government launches Smart Village program

Anandiben Patel-government has announced that 6,000 of around 18,000 villages in Gujarat have become open defecation free (ODF), and the rest would be ODF much before the 2019 deadline, set by the Centre under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The declaration was made by MoS for Panchayat & Rural Development (Independent Charge) Jayanti Kavadia at Mahatma Mandir here at an official programme to launch ambitious Smart Village project of the Gujarat government in the presence of Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, other senior ministers and bureaucrats. The event was organised to mark the beginning of Anandiben’s third year in office.

Union Government constituted DB Shekatkar Committee on defence spending

The Union Government has constituted a committee of experts on defence spending. The 11-member committee will be headed by Lt Gen DB Shekatkar (retd) and include top military officers and civilian experts. The committee will recommend measures to enhance the combat capabilities of the over 13-lakh strong armed forces. It will also focus on re-balanceing the overall defence expenditure in view of the escalating salary and pension bills. It was mandated to submit the report in three months.

Obama lifts US embargo on lethal arms sales to Vietnam

President Barack Obama has announced the US is fully lifting its embargo on sales of lethal weapons to Vietnam, its one-time enemy. The US is trying to bolster its relationship with its Pacific allies, as China asserts territorial claims. Vietnam is one of several countries in the region involved in maritime disputes with China. The US insists on the right to freedom of navigation in the South China Sea. In 2014, a row over a Chinese oil rig near the Paracel islands led to clashes between Chinese and Vietnamese vessels and anti-China riots in Vietnam.

NALCO signs MoU with Iran to set up smelter plant in Chabahar

National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has signed a MoU with Iranian Mines & Mining Industries Development & Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) to explore the possibility of setting up a smelter on joint venture in Iran. For the proposed smelter plant in Chabahar Free Trade Zone, Nalco would supply alumina from its refinery in India. The MoU was signed between chairman-cum-managing director of Nalco and vice chairman of Iran’s planning board in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of Iran Hassan Rouhani in Tehran.

India, Oman sign 4 bilateral agreements on defence cooperation

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar, accompanied by a high level delegation, visited Oman from May 20-22 at the invitation of minister responsible for Defence Affairs of Oman Badr Bin Saud Bin Harib Al Busaidi, during which four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and a protocol were signed between the two nations. A defence industry delegation comprising SC Bajpai, additional director general, Ordnance Factory Board, and SK Sharma, CMD, Bharat Electronics Limited also accompanied the minister.

India and Iran sign 12 Bilateral Agreements in various areas including Chabahar Port Development

India and Iran have decided to jointly combat terror, radicalism and cyber crime as the two strategic partners signed 12 agreements including a “milestone” pact on developing the key Chabahar port for which India will provide $500 million. Besides developing the Chabahar port, the two sides also singed agreements in diverse fields like trade credit, culture, science and technology and railways.

India’s first reusable space shuttle RLV-TD launched

India successfully tested its first-ever indigenous space shuttle as its scale model – the Re-Usable Launch Vehicle – Technology Demonstrator or RLV-TD – was launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. Nearly 20 minutes after its lift-off, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) announced, “mission accomplished”.

  • The 6.5 metre-long scale model of the re-usable launch vehicle weighs about 1.75 tonnes and was made at a cost of Rs. 95 crore. It was built at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram by a team of 600 scientists over five years.
  • ISRO plans to test two more such prototypes before the final version which will be about six times larger at around 40 metres and will take off around 2030.

Pankaj Advani wins Asian 6-Red Snooker title

India’s ace cueist Pankaj Advani created history in Abu Dhabi by clinching the Asian 6-Red snooker title. Advani thus became the first in the world to hold both world and continental titles in 6-Red snooker at the same time, according to information received here. The double IBSF World 6-Red snooker champion stamped his authority again in the short format of the game, defeating top-seeded Malaysian Keen Hoh Moh 7-5 on Sunday night.

Mohun Bagan wins 2016 Indian Federation Cup football tournament

Mohun Bagan perfected a spectacular second-half resurgence to floor Aizawl FC by a record 5-0 margin and regain the Federation Cup football title after eight years, at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. Aizawl, which had surprised everyone with a series of outstanding performances including the vanquishing of I-League champion Bengaluru FC, had to submit to Bagan’s supremacy.

The Kolkata giant produced one of its finest runs of success, scoring 17 goals and conceding just two in the five matches it played in the tournament and in the process extending the record of winning the title to 14. The last time Bagan had won the title was in 2008, when it beat Dempo 1-0 at home. Bagan, which had struggled in a barren first half, made a fantastic turnaround after the break.
