Actor Manoj Kumar to be awarded Dadasaheb Phalke Award
Veteran film actor and director Manoj Kumar is to be conferred the 47th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2015. The award is conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema. Manoj Kumar is remembered for his films Hariyali Aur Raasta, Woh Kaun Thi, Himalaya Ki God Mein, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and Kranti. He is known for acting in and directing films with patriotic themes. He is a recipient of the National Film Award for the film Upkaar. In 1992, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the government of India. Manoj Kumar’s last big screen appearance was in the 1995 film ‘Maidan-E-Jung’. He says he will try to be more active in the film industry now.

Sunil Sabharwal took charge as Alternate Executive Director at IMF
Independent investor Sunil Sabharwal has become the first Indian-American to occupy a key administration post at the IMF. Sabharwal, who was confirmed by the US Senate after a long waiting, assumed the position as Alternate Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund. Given that the US commends more than 16.81% of the total IMF voting share; this is one of the most powerful positions in the International Monetary Fund. US President Barack Obama nominated him for the post in April 2014 and then re-nominated Sabharwal in March 2015. Born to an Indian father and a Hungarian mother in New Delhi, his parents separated when he was 9 years old and he later moved to Budapest.

Mrugank Paranjape appointed as MD & CEO of MCX
Multi-Commodity Exchange has announced appointment of Mrugank Paranjape as MD & CEO of the exchange. The appointment will be for a period of three years, subject to prior approval from Sebi and such other approvals as may be necessary. Since May 2014, the exchange was functioning without an MD. PK Singhal was handling the affairs of the exchange as joint MD. Now with the appointment of the MD, Singhal has been re-designated as the President and Whole Time Director effective April 01, 2016. Mrugank Paranjape has been working with Deutsche Bank since last 14 years. Last he was heading DB Center of the bank.

Election Commission announces 5 state assembly poll dates
Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi has announced the poll schedule for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry. While elections will be held on different dates in the four states and one UT, all the results will be declared on May 19. The Model Code of Conduct will be enforced with immediate effect and the governments of the poll-bound states as well as the Centre would not be able to announce any new schemes or programmes that may influence the voters.

PM Narendra Modi launches Setu Bharatam Project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated an ambitious Rs 50,800-crore Setu Bharatam project, under which a total of 208 railway crossings will be replaced by rail over bridges (ROBs). As part of the project, 1,500 bridges of the British era will be overhauled at an estimated expenditure of Rs. 30,000 crore. The ministry has already launched an Indian Bridge Management System to map 1,50,000 bridges across the country. Till now, an inventory of 50,000 bridges has been prepared while the first cycle of condition survey will be completed by June this year. Lauding Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for “pioneering work” in infrastructure, Modi said infrastructure plays a pivotal role in the country’s growth and a comprehensive integrated approach has been initiated.

Abolition of Interview for Group C and D Services
The Central Government has decided to dispense with the interview for all Group C (including Group D) and non-gazetted Group B category in Central Government by 31.12.2015. Accordingly, instructions have been issued to the Staff Selection Commission mandated with the recruitment of mainly Group B (Non-Gazetted) and Group C (Non-technical) posts in the Central Ministries/Departments to discontinue the interview in all mandated recruitments commencing from 1.1.2016. SSC has already issued a notification for Combined Graduate Level Examination (CGLE) 2016 for recruitment of various Group B and Group C Posts in the Central Ministries/Departments/ Attached and Subordinate Offices, and notification of Sub-inspectors in Delhi Police, Central Armed Para-military Forces (CAPFs) and Assistant Sub-inspectors in Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Examination 2016, in which interview has been dispensed with.

India denies visa to members of US religious commission
US commission scheduled to visit India to discuss and report on the conditions of religious freedom in the country has been denied visa by the Indian government. A three-member delegation of US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) wanted to make a one-week visit to meet with government officials, religious leaders and activists in India. This is not the first time the USCIRF members have not been issued visas. The members, who prepare an annual report on religious freedom in countries across the globe, were denied the visas for the first time in previous UPA regime. USCIRF has been able to travel to many countries, including those that are among the worst offenders of religious freedom, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, China and Burma.

South Korea passes first Anti-terror Bill
South Korea’s parliament has passed the country’s first anti-terror bill, with opposition lawmakers leaving the plenary chamber after ending the nine-day marathon speeches. Among almost 300 parliamentary seats, only 156 ruling Saenuri Party lawmakers and one minority party member participated in a vote on the country’s first anti-terrorism legislation, which was passed through the National Assembly with 156 in favour. The bill, which was first brought up in South Korea in 2001 after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US, had repeatedly failed to be enacted due to worries about abuse of power by the country’s spy agency.

World Wildlife Day – March 3
World Wildlife Day is marked on March 3 to raise awareness for the planet’s wild animals and plants. World Wildlife Day was first introduced to our calendars by the United Nations in 2013. World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that conservation provides to people. With 182 Member States, CITES remains one of the world’s most powerful tools for biodiversity conservation through the regulation of trade in wild fauna and flora. CITES – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. According to the CITES, the killing of African elephants and trafficking in their ivory remain alarmingly high. Asian elephants are also subject to growing levels of poaching. An estimate shows that about 100,000 elephants were slaughtered for their ivory between 2010 and 2012.

World’s most expensive train station opened in NY at 9/11 site
The world’s most expensive train station is opened in New York. The station has been designed by Santiago Calatrava, a Spanish-Swiss architect. The World Trade Center Transportation Hub, which is expected eventually to serve more than 200,000 commuters daily, is built next to the site of the Twin Towers, which were destroyed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. The building has become a major source of controversy — for its daring aesthetic, for spiraling drastically off budget and for closing seven years behind schedule. Initially budgeted at US$2 billion, it ended up costing US$3.85 billion. That would make it the most expensive station in the world.

After Ranji, Mumbai clinch Col CK Nayudu Trophy too
After clinching their 41st Ranji Trophy title in Pune recently, Mumbai annexed their second title this season when they won the Col CK Nayudu Trophy (U-23) by beating Madhya Pradesh. The victorious team became richer by Rs 20 lakh for winning the Nayudu Trophy. Mumbai ran up a tall score of 577 all out to which Madhya Pradesh replied with 422 all out before the game petered out into a tame draw on the final day. Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu, also known as ‘CK’, was the first captain of the Indian cricket team in Test matches. He played first-class cricket regularly till 1958, and returned for one last time in 1963 at the age of 68.

Jitu Rai wins Gold medal in 50m pistol event at ISSF World Cup
Indian shooter Jitu Rai has won a gold in the 50m pistol event at the 2016 ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) World Cup in Bangkok. The 28-year-old Nepalese origin shooter faced tough competition from China’s Olympic Champion Pang Wei and Olympic Bronze medallist Wang Zhiwei — who stood second and third respectively. He won three gold medals in 2014: in the ISSF World Cup in Maribor, in the Asian Games in Incheon as well as in the Commonwealth Games. Jitu Rai is now also in contention to bag another medal in the 10m Air Pistol event, the finals of which will take place on March 05′ 2016. Gagan Narang and Chain Singh will also be seen in the Men’s 50m Air Rifle event finals on the same day.

OBITUARY
PA Sangma former speaker of Lok Sabha Passed away
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma died due to heart attack at the age of 68. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan announced the news of his death in the House, which was adjourned for the day. Condoling the death of Sangma, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “a self-made leader whose contribution towards the development of the North East is monumental. Sangma was a nine-time member of Lok Sabha and the Speaker in the 11th Lok Sabha. He had also held important portfolios in the central government. He was also the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990 and Leader of Opposition in the assembly from 1990 to 1991.

All-India Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh passes away
All-India Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh, has passed away at the age of 93. He is one of the most respected leaders in West Bengal and instrumental in formation of the CPI (M)-led Left Front government. In a political career that spanned over seven decades, nearly 65 years were spent as Secretary of the State wing of the All India Forward Bloc, the party founded by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He became the Secretary in 1951, and remained so till his death. Born on July 2, 1923 at Chinsurah Hooghly, Ghosh, inspired by Netaji, was drawn to the freedom struggle at a very early age. He joined the Forward Bloc in 1941. Over the years, Ghosh gained prominence as a leader, who was in the forefront of several mass movements; and also hailed as a keen political tactician.
