Poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas selected for 2015 Bihari Puraskar
Eminent poet Dr Bhagwati Lal Vyas has been chosen for the 2015 Bihari Puraskar for his anthology of Rajasthani poems ‘Katha Sun Aawe Hai Sabad’. A recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award, Dr Vyas has highlighted the increasing tendencies of commercialization and degradation of human values through his poetry. Dr Vyas’s works reflect the unpleasant changes in human relations, social disparity and loss of human values although positivity and his faith in human life also shine through the vast collection of his poetry.

Carriage by Air Amendment Bill gets Rajya Sabha nod
A bill that would enhance compensation for air travellers in case of death, injury, lost baggage or even inordinate delay in flights was passed by the Rajya Sabha with some changes. It was cleared by the Lok Sabha in December last year. Since the Rajya Sabha has made changes, the revised bill would again go to the Lower House. Once the legislation is implemented, Indian airlines would be required to pay compensation amount that is equivalent to the rates paid by their global counterparts. The legislation would allow the government to revise the liability limits of airlines in line with the Montreal Convention, which was acceded to by India in May 2009.

NHAI ties up with ISB for skill development
NHAI has taken a significant step in ensuring development of management competencies of its technical and managerial manpower, with a tie up with Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. With the Government’s ambitious plans for infrastructure development in the country, road sector is seen as one of the thrust areas to achieve the objective and ensure sustained economic growth. The programme on “Leadership Programme in Infrastructure Management” in ISB aims at developing skills and competencies relating to multiple disciplines : Strategic Planning, Finance, Economics, Law, Social and Environmental issues, Public Policy etc. in Infrastructure Management.

PM Modi’s hometown to be open defecation free
Mehsana district administration has roped in the self-help groups (SHGs) to attain total eradication of open defecation. The district administration will motivate the public to join this sanitation drive in the district. First, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hometown Vadnagar in Mehsana district will be made open defecation-free (ODF) before March 15. Later, the district administration has planned to cover Unjha, Visnagar, Vijapur, Jotana, Bechraji talukas. Under the joint signature of the district collector and the DDO, 187 villages have been adopted by class-1-2 officials of all cadres of the district and one village per an employee come under the district panchayat given for undertaking ODF activities.

CBI sets up group to deal with financial frauds
The CBI has set up a working group to coordinate with various financial institutions to help curb financial frauds. CBI Director Anil Sinha said that the group will meet regularly and go into various aspects relating to early detection of frauds and defaults. He said, the working group will look into every default so that it can be declared fraud swiftly and CBI can investigate them expeditiously. Mr Sinha called for free-flow and exchange of information between various institutions so that CBI can actually have a very effective mechanism to proceed against people who are swindling public of their money and also who are causing severe losses to banks. Sinha said the CBI will now be engaging with financial bodies like banks, insurance firms and regulatory authorities, for capacity building programme

UNSC unanimously expands sanctions on North Korea
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution significantly expanding international sanctions against North Korea. The new measures amount to some of the toughest against North Korea in two decades. The vote is in response to North Korea’s nuclear test last month. The sanctions will result in all cargo going to and from the country being inspected, while 16 new individuals and 12 organisations have been blacklisted. In addition to the mandatory cargo inspections the sanctions also include a ban on all sales or transfers of small arms and light weapons to North Korea, and expulsion of diplomats from the North who engage in “illicit activities”.

MoUs with Japan and Russia in the various fields of Railways
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of the following Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs). The MoC signed between Ministry of Railways (MoR) and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Japan on technological cooperation in Rail Sector on 11th December 2015. The MoU signed between Ministry of Railways and Joint Stock Company “Russian Railways” on technical cooperation in railway sector on 24th December 2015. The MoU signed between Research Design & Standards Organization (RDSO) and Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI), Japan on technological cooperation in railway sector on 11th December 2015.

OBITUARY
Former New Zealand Captain Martin Crowe passes away
Martin Crowe, the legendary cricketer from from New Zealand, has passed away due to cancer at the age of 53. Crowe was first diagnosed with aggressive follicular lymphoma in 2012 and after chemotherapy, he was thought to be in remission. But Crowe announced in September 2014 that the cancer, which he called “my friend and tough taskmaster,” had returned. Crowe captained the Kiwis in 16 Test matches and his highest score was 299 against Sri Lanka in Wellington in 1991. Named one of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 1985, he was player of the tournament at the 1992 World Cup, scoring 456 runs in nine matches. He retired in 1996 with a knee injury and went on to become a television commentator and author.
