Eminent Marathi film and stage actress, Shanta alias Bimba Modak of yesteryear passed away on 28 April 2015 in Pune at the age of 97.

Modak, had entered into the film industry during the time when it was considered as taboo for women to work in cinema. she had earned a wide acclaim in both the art streams after she also had acted in her first role on the Marathi stage in Bhavabandhan. Some of her best films included In Min Sadetin and Un Paus.

About Bimba Modak

1. Her debut film was Chul aani Mul in 1946, which was directed by noted playwright and writer Vishram Bedekar.
2. She also had learned Natyasangeet from legendary Bal Gandharva’s musicals and had acted in the plays like Swayamwar, Manapaman and Saubhadra.
3. Awards and honours:  Maharashtra government had honoured her with lifetime award in 1980.
