Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has inaugurated the first of the six new Indian Institutes of Management in Nagpur. The proposal of setting up of six IIMs was made by Narendra Modi government last year. It is Maharashtra’s first IIM and is being mentored by IIM Ahmedabad. It will start its first batch with 60 students from a temporary campus in Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology.

- The GOI had proposed to set up IIMs at Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.
- Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was the first IIM to be set up, on 13 November 1961.
- The establishment of IIMs was initiated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
- IIMs are registered as societies under the Indian Societies Registration Act.
- At present, there are 13 IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, Indore, Shillong, Tiruchirappalli, Raipur, Udaipur, Rohtak, Ranchi and Kashipur.
