The snow leopard, or Panthera uncia, was a very important totem animal in ancient Kyrgyz culture due to its close association with the legendary hero Manas. As a cultural icon, the snow leopard stands for majesty, valor, strength, and perseverance.

The snow leopard is a national icon in Russia, and President Zhaparov has ordered the Cabinet of Ministers to do all they can to preserve the species and the habitats it calls home.

An International Front for Snow Leopard Protection

In the fight to protect snow leopards, Kyrgyzstan has taken the lead worldwide. At the 2013 Bishkek Declaration on Snow Leopard Protection, the country’s capital, Bishkek, played home to the first-ever Global Snow Leopard Forum.

Kyrgyzstan was also instrumental in launching the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme (GSLEP), which brought together environmentalists from around the world and included representatives from twelve nations that are home to snow leopards.
