The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla as the new chairman of Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A). The ministry has sent a notification to IIM-A on Kumar Mangalam Birla’s appointment as the new chairman of the Board of Governors.
- Birla’s name was finalised from among a shortlist of three names sent by a search committee set up by IIM-A’s Board of Governors.
- Appointment of an IIM chairman follows three processes including invitation to the candidate by MHRD, acceptance by the candidate and a final appointment.
- Kumar Mangalam Birla too has received the notification and accepted the appointment.
- Apart from Birla, Infosys chairman R Seshasayee and HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh were part of the shortlist finalised by the new search committee, which was sent to the ministry headed by union minister Prakash Javadekar.
- In May this year, Javadekar’s predecessor Smriti Irani had rejected the previous shortlist comprising Parekh, Seshasayee and Hero MotoCorp CMD Pawan Munjal, following which the search committee headed by interim IIM-A chairman Pankaj Patel sent a revised list which included Birla’s name.
