The cabinet on November 25 officially made the Kerala Hotel (Food Price Regulation) Bill 2015 which forecasted formation of regulatory authority for grading eateries and fixing food prices.
Background:-
- Accordingly, when the bill is enacted into a law, the state would have hotel food price regulatory boards at all districts, which would be headed by a district judge or a law officer of similar rank.
- Except hotels in star and heritage categories, all eateries would come under the regulatory board.
- As per the bill, all eateries would have to register with the regulatory authority, which would fix the prices of the food items.
- Hotels would be allowed to increase the food prices only after a formal consent from the authority, which would have the power to slap fine on eateries charging for items above the notified prices.
- The decisions of the authority could not be questioned in a civil court, but aggrieved parties can appeal with state food commission.
