Kerala to have price regulatory authority for hotels

The cabinet on November 25 officially made the Kerala Hotel (Food Price Regulation) Bill 2015 which forecasted formation of regulatory authority for grading eateries and fixing food prices.

Background:-

  • Accordingly, when the bill is enacted into a law, the state would have hotel food price regulatory boards at all districts, which would be headed by a district judge or a law officer of similar rank.
  • Except hotels in star and heritage categories, all eateries would come under the regulatory board.
  • As per the bill, all eateries would have to register with the regulatory authority, which would fix the prices of the food items.
  • Hotels would be allowed to increase the food prices only after a formal consent from the authority, which would have the power to slap fine on eateries charging for items above the notified prices.
  • The decisions of the authority could not be questioned in a civil court, but aggrieved parties can appeal with state food commission.
