President has appointed Justice Cyriac Joseph to be Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He will succeed Justice K.G. Balakrishnan after he completes his tenure. He will serve in office till New Chairman is appointed.
Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, the sixth and the longest serving Chairman NHRC had completed his tenure on 11 May 2015. He has served as Chairman of Commission in June 2010 and he has also served as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from 2007 to 2010. During his tenure, he charged out several new initiatives towards promotion and protection of human rights in the country. He was the first person of Dalit origin to confer to post of the CJI in the Supreme Court of India.
