Ranveer Singh wins Best Actor at IIFA Awards ’16

Bollywood stars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh bagged the Best Actor (Female) and Best Actor (Male) trophy at the 17th IIFA extravaganza for their performance in Piku and Bajirao Mastani respectively. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s historical romance Bajirao Mastanidominated the winner’s list at the 17th IIFA awards. Bajirao Mastani, which revolved around Peshwa Bajirao falling in love with Mastani, a warrior princess in distress, swept 13 awards.

APPOINTMENTS

Nokia appoints Sanjay Malik as India’s head

Nokia has appointed Sanjay Malik as the new head of the India market. He will be taking over from the current India head Sandeep Girotra who has been recently promoted as the head of the Asia-Pacific and Japan market for Nokia. Malik will be based in Gurgaon and will lead the customer operations, drive the business growth strategy and customer engagement services, effective from August 1, 2016. He is currently the vice president and head of global network implementation services, which is a part of the company’s Global Services business.

BANKING AND FINANCE

ADB extends $500-million loan for river bridge in Bihar

Asian Development Bank has approved $500 million (approximately Rs 3350 crore) loan for constructing a bridge across Ganga. Once built, the 9.8 km road bridge in Bihar will be country’s longest river bridge. The bridge would provide vital transport links between the northern and southern parts of the state and with neighboring country Nepal. The project will run for about 4 years and is expected to complete by the end of December 2020.

Lending agency AIIB approves first batch of loans

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank or AIIB has approved 165 million U.S. dollars in loans for a Bangladesh project – the first batch of loan for the country from the China-led development bank. The banks Board of Directors approved its first 4 loans totaling 509 million U.S.dollars to finance 4 projects including that one of Bangladesh.

Colombia government, FARC rebels sign the historic ceasefire

The Colombian government and FARC rebels signed a ceasefire and disarmament agreement, one of the last steps toward ending a half-century conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people. The deal puts a definitive end to fighting in Latin America’s longest civil war, which has torn the country apart with shootings and bombardments in its coca-rich jungles and hills.

Mahashangarh declared as the SAARC cultural capital for 2016-17

Mahasthangarh, the 3rd century BC archaeological site in Bogra, Bangladesh, has been declared as the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) cultural capital for the year 2016-17. As a SARRC cultural capital, the historic place will host festivals on literature, films, foods and dances from October 2016 to September 2017.

Nepal bans citizens from working in Afghanistan

Nepal has banned its citizens from working in Afghanistan after 13 of its citizens were killed and six more injured in a suicide attack in Kabul recently. The dead men, who were employed as security guards in the Canadian embassy in Kabul, were killed in an early morning attack by the Taliban on June 20 when they were on their way to work.  The government also decided to continue an earlier ban on Nepalis working in three other conflict-hit countries – Iraq, Libya and Syria.

US to lift ban on transgenders in military

The Pentagon plans to announce the repeal of its ban on openly serving transgender service members next month. The repeal would come five years after a 2011 decision to end the US military’s ban on gays and lesbians serving openly, despite fears – which proved unfounded – that such a move would be too great a burden in wartime and would undermine readiness.

Volkswagen to pay $10 bn in US emissions scam

Volkswagen has agreed to pay USD 10 billion to settle a huge US civil case over its diesel emissions-cheating scandal. As part of the settlement, Volkswagen would compensate owners of around 480,000 2.0-liter diesel cars up to USD 7,000 in cash each, and would also fund a programme to fight air pollution.

BrahMos integrated with IAF’s fighter jet

Brahmos, the world’s “most formidable” supersonic cruise missile system has been successfully integrated and test-flown with IAF’s Su-30MKI frontline strike fighter. BrahMos is a leading cruise missile capable of hitting targets beyond radar horizons. This fire-and-forget world class missile has the capability to take on targets by flying a combined high-low trajectory, thus evading enemy air defence systems.

US Navy developing electromagnetic canon

The US Navy is quietly pushing ahead with a radical new cannon that one day could transform how wars are fought, even though some Pentagon officials have voiced concerns over its cost and viability. Named the railgun, the weapon in question represents a paradigm shift in ballistic technology. Instead of using gunpowder and explosive charges to shoot a shell from its barrel, it employs vast amounts of electromagnetic energy to zoom a projectile along a set of copper-alloy rails.

Dutee Chand qualifies for Rio 2016 Olympics

Dutee Chand qualified for Rio Olympics in the women’s 100m event after meeting the qualification mark at XXVI International Meeting G.Kosanov Memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Dutee clocked 11.30s in the 100m heats at the memorial tournament hence beating the Rio Olympics qualification mark of 11.32 secs. Dutee became the first Indian woman to qualify for the event since qualification started for the event. PT Usha had qualified for the event in 1980 Olympics.

India jumps to number 5 in world hockey rankings

India’s men hockey team jumped to fifth position ahead of the likes of Belgium, Argentina and New Zealand when the Indian hockey team lodged a protest during the penalty shootout before finally settling for historic silver after the jury announced that the 1-3 result against Australia. India now has 1689 points at the conclusion of the Champions Trophy, 56 points ahead of sixth-placed Belgium (1633) and just eight away from Great Britain (1697) on fourth.

Harmanpreet 1st Indian woman in int’l T20 league

Moga’s Harmanpreet Kaur has become the first Indian woman cricketer to be signed by a foreign T20 franchise, Sydney Thunder. She has for the second edition of the women’s Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, to be played in December-January. The 27-year-old batswoman and medium-fast bowler got this opportunity from the defending champions based on her all-around abilities and her recent performances. A power-hitter, Harmanpreet was an outstanding performer for India in this year’s World T20. In T20 she scored 89 runs and took seven wickets in four matches.

OBITUARY

Quizmaster Neil O’Brien passes away aged 82

Neil O’Brien, a pioneer of quizzing in India and leader of the Anglo-Indian community, passed away at the age of 82. Neil O’Brien, former MP of the Lok Sabha and erstwhile member of West Bengal Assembly is survived by his wife and three sons. One of the first quiz masters Neil O’Brien had conducted the first well-organised, formal quiz in 1967 at Christ the King Church Parish Hall in the city.
