Freida to get International Icon Award at IIFA
Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto will make her debut at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) gala in Madrid. The US-based Indian actress will be honoured with International Icon award at the 17th edition of the gala. IIFA — often known as Bollywood’s Oscars — is held every year to honour the best of Hindi cinema. A source from the IIFA team confirmed that Freida will be getting the honour.

IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal awarded 2015 GD Birla Award
IIT-Kanpur professor Sanjay Mittal has bagged the prestigious GD Birla Award for Scientific Research for 2016. Mittal, a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, has been chosen for his contribution in the area of Mechanics.

Urmila Chanam of Manipur wins global award
Social activist Urmila Chanam has been awarded Voices of Our Future Award by World Pulse, a social networking platform connecting women from 190 countries across the world with a vision to amplify women’s voices to speed up change and improve the lives of millions around the world. Chanam from Manipur was among three from across the world who received the award. The other two recipients are Sadaf Kashif from Pakistan and Carolyn Seaman from Nigeria.

Govt releases draft National Forest Policy
The government has made its draft National Forest Policy, to replace the one crafted in 1988. The draft incorporated the consequences of climate change but entirely ignoring one of the three forest related laws, the Forest Rights Act, the policy brings new focus to plantations, growing trees outside forest lands and wood industry. The policy continues with the national goal of a minimum of one-third of the geographical area under forest or tree cover. But it does away with the goal for hill and mountainous regions to maintain two-thirds of the geographical area under forest cover.

Aadhaar to be linked with caste certificates
All State governments are asked to link Aadhaar with caste and domicile certificates to be issued to school students. It is linked as part of a first-of-its-kind initiative by the Centre. The States have been told to ensure that such certificates are issued within 60 days to the students when they are studying in Class V or VIII. The development assumes significance as there have been complaints of delay in grant of scholarship to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Besides, people have often complained of harassment allegedly by government officials in getting caste and domicile certificates issued.

Nagaland launches women helpline ‘181’
Nagaland Governor PB Acharya has launched women helpline – 181 in the premises of District Hospital Dimapur in Nagaland and also inaugurated Sakhi, a one stop Centre, intended to support women affected by violence both in private and public spaces under one roof. He highlighted the multiple roles played by women as home makers, guardians of children and the hard work put in by them in every field.

Air Force to set up training base at Kodiakarai
Indian Air Force is planning to set up a training base at Kodiakarai, a coastal town Tamil Nadu, and an aerial survey has been conducted to identify the site for the project. IAF has already established a RADAR station at Kodiakarai for surveillance along the Palk Bay and Palk Strait. The Union Defence Ministry has requested the state government to allot land for the training base at Kodiakarai.

Britain votes to leave the European Union
Britain has voted to leave the European Union, a historic decision sure to reshape the nation’s place in the world, rattle the Continent and rock political establishments throughout the West. The margin of victory startled even proponents of a British exit. The “Leave” campaign won by 52 percent to 48 percent. More than 17.4 million people voted in the referendum on Thursday to sever ties with the European Union, and about 16.1 million to remain in the bloc.

International Widows Day – June 23
There are around 259 million widows around the world and a large number of them are forced to live in abject poverty and suffer ill-treatment as an ostracised community. International Widows’s Day is celebrated on 23 June in an effort to shed light on the plight of widows who are considered social stigma. The annual global day of action to highlight the desperate plight of millions of widows all over the world was launched by The Loomba Foundation in 2005 and following a five-year campaign was adopted unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010.

World Public Service Day – June 23
The UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/277, designated 23 June as Public Service Day. The UN Public Service Day intends to celebrate the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlight the contribution of public service in the development process; recognize the work of public servants, and encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector. Since the first Awards Ceremony in 2003, the United Nations has received an increasing number of submissions from all around the world.

IWAI and IPGPL ink MoU on Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project
The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) in Myanmar was conceptualized and is being administered by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). This is with a view to facilitate connectivity between the mainland and the North Eastern States of the country through maritime shipping, inland waterways and roads of Myanmar. The link between North Eastern States of India and Myanmar will pave the way for enhanced trade & commerce across the border and enable cultural and social integration at the regional level.

PM Modi arrives in Tashkent for SCO Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tashkent to a warm welcome as he kicked off a two-day visit to attend the annual summit of the SCO with an aim to expand India’s engagement with the China-dominated grouping in areas of security, defence and energy. In a special gesture, Modi was received at the Tashkent international airport by his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoev.

India, Switzerland ink MoU to enhance cooperation in skill development
India and Switzerland have signed an agreement to establish formal cooperation in the fields of skills development and vocational and professional education and training. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Winterthur between State Secretary Mauro Dell’ Ambrogio and Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Govt launches project for CNG-run two-wheelers
Scooters and motorcycles that run on non-polluting natural gas could be on India’s roads one day, if a pilot project involving 10 such two-wheelers launched proves successful. The 10 two-wheelers retrofitted with compressed natural gas (CNG) systems are the first of 50 such vehicles which will be released in Delhi within a month. Emissions and efficiency of these vehicles will be closely monitored. Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar and petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the pilot in the national capital.

Anil Kumble named head coach of Indian team
Anil Kumble, the former India Test captain and the country’s most successful bowler, has been named as the coach of the men’s cricket team. The announcement was made in Dharamsala, where the BCCI is holding its first annual cricket conclave, with board president Anurag Thakur and its secretary Ajay Shirke naming Kumble in a press conference. There was speculation that Ravi Shastri, who was team director until April, would be accommodated in the position of batting coach.
