Former Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi appointed UPSC member
Former Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has been appointed as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Bassi’s appointment to the job, which is a constitutional post with a tenure of five years, came three months after he retired as the capital’s top cop. Bassi was criticised both by AAP and Congress for police action during the JNU row, including the arrest of JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar.

Rahul Johri takes charge as first ever CEO of BCCI
BCCI president Anurag Thakur has welcomed former media professional Rahul Johri who has joined the cricket board as its first ever chief executive officer (CEO). Johri’s appointment as CEO, is in line with the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Justice R.M. Lodha Committee. Johri, who will report to Secretary Ajay Shirke, will be based at the board’s Mumbai office. According to the BCCI rulebook, which in itself is under the scanner, the secretary is vested with all the executive powers. Prior to this, Johri was the Asia Pacific executive vice-president and general manager for South Asia with Discovery Networks.

India, World Bank sign agreement for efficient bus service
The Government of India and the World Bank has signed a US$ 9.2 million grant agreement under the World Bank-Global Environment Facility (GEF) Program for the Efficient and Sustainable City Bus Service Project to improve the efficiency and attractiveness of bus services in select Indian cities.
The project will demonstrate low cost high impact initiatives in efficient bus operations by focusing on modernizing city bus services through modern depots for improving the maintenance of buses; introducing modern Intelligent Transport Systems and Management Information Systems for better planning and management of operations; and by providing technical support to vehicles and drivers for better fuel efficiency, among others, according to the World Bank.

Union Cabinet approves setting up of India Post Payments Bank
The Union Cabinet under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for setting up the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) as a Public Limited Company under the Department of Posts, with 100% Government of India (GOI) equity.
The total expenditure involved in this project is Rs 800 Crore. All citizens, especially 40% of the country’s population that is outside the ambit of formal banking in the country will benefit from this project. The project will be rolled out in the entire country in a phased manner.
The IPPB will obtain banking licence from RBI by March 2017 and by September 2017, its services will be available across the country through 650 payments bank branches, linked post offices and alternative channels riding on modern technology including mobiles, ATMs, PoS/ m-PoS devices etc and simple digital payments.

Prime Minister releases National Disaster Management Plan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP). This is the first ever national plan prepared in the country. It aims to make India disaster resilient and significantly reduce the loss of lives and assets. The plan is based on the four priority themes of the “Sendai Framework,” namely: understanding disaster risk, improving disaster risk governance, investing in disaster risk reduction (through structural and non-structural measures) and disaster preparedness, early warning and building back better in the aftermath of a disaster.

Gotthard Base: World’s longest and deepest tunnel opens in Switzerland
The world’s longest tunnel officially opened with the trailblazing rail passage under the Swiss Alps aiming to ease transit through the heart of Europe. The 57km (35-mile) twin-bore Gotthard base tunnel will provide a high-speed rail link under the Swiss Alps between northern and southern Europe. Switzerland says it will revolutionise European freight transport.
Goods currently carried on the route by a million lorries a year will go by train instead. The tunnel has overtaken Japan’s 53.9km Seikan rail tunnel as the longest in the world and pushed the 50.5km Channel Tunnel linking the UK and France into third place.

Cabinet approves MoU between USA and India
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between United States of America and India to enhance cooperation in the field of wildlife conservation and combating wildlife trafficking. With the approval, India will benefit from the expertise of the US Institutions in the field of wildlife conservation and management of wildlife areas and in combating illegal trade of wildlife and their derivatives.

India, Morocco launch Chamber of Commerce and Industry to boost trade
India and Morocco have jointly launched a trade body to boost bilateral commercial engagements. The India-Morocco Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IMCCI) was launched by visiting Vice President Hamid Ansari and Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane. The bilateral trade between the two countries stood at USD 1.26 billion in 2015 with Indian exports forming roughly 25 per cent of the trade volume.
Ansari said that Morocco has emerged as a favoured destination for investments by Indian firms, adding that Indian companies have cumulatively invested more that USD 320 million in Morocco, including in the flagship project, the Indo-Maroc Phosphore SA joint venture.

Union Cabinet approves MoU between DGCA and French Civil Aviation Authority
The Union Cabinet has approved an agreement between India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the French civil aviation authority to implement technical cooperation programme for standards and recommended practices of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DGCA and Direction Generale de l’Aviation Civile or DGAC, would be effective for a term of four years.

TRAI launches app to avoid unwanted calls, texts
TRAI, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India is now taking more steps to bring the pesky call menace under control. They have come out with an app named ‘DND Services’ that will help mobile users to manage unsolicited commercial communications (UCC).
The service exists right now as well, and users can file complaints by calling toll-free number 1909, but this app is expected to speed up the process for users. The application is available on Google Play Store and Mobile Seva App Store for download and will be coming to iOS soon. The app required Android 4.0 and above for installation and has a size of 5.8MB.

Argentina retain top spot in FIFA rankings
Argentina have retained their number one spot in FIFA’s rankings ahead of Belgium and Colombia with Copa America and Euro 2016 soon to get underway. India have dropped a place in the latest FIFA rankings released earlier today, with the Blue Tigers ending the month of May ranked 163 in the FIFA rankings. England dropped out of the top ten at the expense of Austria.
Nothern Ireland created history by rising to 25th in the rankings, their best-ever position, ahead of the ‘Green and White Army’s’ debut in the Euros in the summer. Traditional European powerhouses like Italy, France and the Netherlands rose significantly in the table after a couple of months with poor results.

Ronaldo world’s most famous athlete: ESPN
Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as the world’s most famous athlete ahead of his great rival Lionel Messi. The Real Madrid star was named by ESPN in their World Fame 100 ahead of NBA megastar LeBron James and the Barcelona star. The top British athlete was Real Madrid and Wales winger Gareth Bale at No 12 – five places ahead of Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney.
Just eight women made the list with Maria Sharapova (18) the highest-ranked on the list, ahead of UFC star Ronda Rousey (23) and tennis champion Serena Williams (25).

OBITUARY
Noted comedian Razak Khan passes away
Veteran comedy actor Razak Khan, who worked in films like “Hera Pheri”, “Raja Hindustani” and “Baadshah” among others, died following a cardiac arrest. The comedian was also seen in Salman Khan’s “Hello Brother”, Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Baadshah”, and Aamir Khan’s “Raja Hindustani”. Khan’s notable roles include “Anari No 1”, “Hera Pheri”, “Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega”, “Aamdani Atthani Kharcha Rupaiyaa” and “Hungama”.
