WHO declares Brazil free of measles

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Brazil free of measles, after no case of the disease was registered in the last year. In the coming months, the WHO will issue a certification for the eradication of measles to Brazil. The eradication of measles is the conclusion of work spanning several years. Brazil saw no domestic cases of measles from 1985 to 2000, although it broke out in 2013 in the northeastern states of Pernambuco and Ceara.

‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ award for ace violinist Kanyakumari

A. Kanyakumari, an outstanding and versatile violinist, will get the Sangita Kalanidhi award of the Music Academy this year. The executive committee of the Academy held has unanimously chosen her for its coveted award,” said N. Murali, president of Academy.

He said Ms. Kanyakumari was the first woman violinist to get the award in the history of the Music Academy and she will preside over the 90th annual conference of the Academy to be held between December 15, 2016 and January 1, 2017. The award will be conferred on her at the Sadas on January 1, 2017.

APPOINTMENTS

BudhaRashmi Mani appointed as DG of National Museum

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. Budha Rashmi Mani, former Additional Director General, Archaeological Survey of India as the Director General of the National Museum in New Delhi.

The appointment is on contract for a period of three years or till attaining the age of seventy (70) years or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.

Centre approves Rs 1601 crore for Himayat programme in J&K

Centre has approved Rs 1601 crore for Jammu and Kashmir under skill development initiative Himayat to train 1.24 lakh local youths in vocational courses, Rural Development Minister Abdul Haq Khan said. Himayat is a training-cum-placement programme for unemployed youth in Jammu and Kashmir.Youth will be provided short-term training for at least 3 months, in a range of skills for which there is good market demand.

Sharad Pawar to step down voluntarily as Mumbai chief

Sharad Pawar said that he would step down after six months as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president following the Supreme Court’s ruling on age cap of 70 years for cricket administrators. The Lodha Committee recommended that in such cases, the associations vote by rotation; so each of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Vidarbha will get a vote once in three years. “We have no objections on that [one-state, one-vote] but the important issue is the jurisdiction of that member who is going to vote,

IRCTC offers Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for passengers

Railway passengers from next month, booking tickets through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, (IRCTC) website can avail a travel accident cover of Rs. 10 lakh at a premium of one rupee. IRCTC Chairman-cum-Managing Director A.K. Manocha said that the insurance cover is besides the compensation given by the railways in case of accidents to valid ticket holders.

Lewis Hamilton wins 2016 Hungarian Grand Prix of F1

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton from Great Britain has won the 2016 Hungarian Grand Prix title of Formula One. The world champion controlled the race from the moment he passed Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the start and is now six points ahead of the German.

Hamilton had come to the Hungaroring trailing Rosberg by one point in the championship. He leaves six points ahead. It is the culmination of a run in which the British driver has gone from a 43-point deficit by the fourth round in Russia to the lead for the first time this season.

Feliciano Lopez wins 2016 Swiss Open Gstaad

Spanish tennis player Feliciano Lopez won the Swiss Open Gstaad after beating the Dutch Robin Haase in the final 6-4, 7-5 in 77 minutes.

Lopez finally managed to win the tournament after he lost it a decade ago, while this is the Spaniard’s first title on clay and his fifth overall. In 2006, Lopez lost the final of the Swiss Open against the Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

The Spaniard previously won the 2004 Vienna Open, the 2010 Johannesburg Open and the Eatsbourne open in 2013 and 2014. Lopez captured his fifth ATP World Tour title in his 14th final. The 34-year-old Spaniard, who is currently No. 21 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, earned 250 points and €82,450 in prize money. It is his first trophy since June 2014 at Eastbourne.

OBITUARY

Former diplomat Arundhati Ghose passed away

Eminent diplomat Arundhati Ghose, who was India’s ambassador to the UN and played a decisive role in India’s negotiations on Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), passed awayat the age of 76.She was suffering from cancer. During her illustrious career, Ghose had served in a number of positions including in Indian Missions in Austria, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, South Korea and Egypt. She was also the first Indian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Offices in Geneva.
