Nalanda Mahavihara Enters UNESCO’S World Heritage Site List
The archaeological site of Nalanda Mahavihara or Nalanda University in Bihar has been included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, which also featured three new sites from China, Iran and Micronesia.
The inclusion of the four new sites was announced at the 40th session of The World Heritage Committee meeting in Istanbul in Turkey.
- Nalanda and the ruins of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara are almost synonymous. The name Nalanda conjures up a picture of ancient Mahavihara, which was a great seat of Buddhist education for nearly 700 years between the 5th to 12th centuries AD.
- The contribution of the Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda in the development of Buddhist education is widely recognized. Many great Acaryas of Nalanda had helped in dissemination of knowledge and Buddhist culture throughout the world.

Seven Indian firms in Fortune 500 list
Seven Indian companies figure in the latest Fortune 500 list, released of the world’s biggest companies in terms of revenue.
Among Indian companies, state-run Indian Oil Corp (IOC) is ranked highest at 161st with revenues of $54.7 billion, although the other public sector firm Oil and Natural Gas Corp has moved out of the rankings for 2016.

Pema Khandu sworn in as Arunachal Chief Minister
Pema Khandu was sworn in as the ninth chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh marking the culmination of fast-paced political developments in this north-eastern state.
Son of late chief minister Dorjee Khandu, 37-year-old Pema, who became the youngest chief minister in the country, and Mein were administered the oath by governor Tathagata Roy at the Rajbhavan here. Dorjee Khandu had died in an air crash in 2011

RBI sets up an Inter-regulatory Working Group on Fin Tech and Digital Banking
The Reserve Bank of India has set up an inter regulatory Working Group (WG) to study the entire gamut of regulatory issues relating to Fin Tech and Digital Banking in India. The Working Group has been set up in view of the growing significance of Fin Tech innovations and their interactions with the financial sector as well as the financial sector entities.
The Financial Stability and Development Council – Sub Committee (FSDC – SC) at its meeting held on April 26, 2016 had decided to set up such a Working Group to look into and report on the granular aspects of Fin Tech and its implications so as to review and appropriately reorient the regulatory framework and respond to the dynamics of the rapidly evolving Fin Tech scenario.

“ Ramayana month”begins in Kerala
The annual ‘Ramayana Month’ began in Kerala with temples and Hindu houses across the state resonating with the chanting of the epic Ramayana. Karkkidakam’, the last month in the Malayalam almanac, is observed as the auspicious Ramayana month in the kerala .
It has been a decades-old tradition that devotees, especially elders, recite “Adhyatma Ramayana” authored by medieval devotional poet Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, in the next one month to mark the period.

Delhi CM launches live interactive programme TalkToAK
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has launched a live interactive programme, titled ‘TalkToAK’, aimed at directly engaging with the Delhi people , where people from across the country can ask him questions over the phone, by sending text messages and through social media.
The move, intended to reach out to people across the country, comes at a time when his Aam Aadmi Party is gearing up for Assembly elections in a number of states including Goa, Punjab and Gujarat.

Commerce ministry starts e-marketplace for goods procurement
The Commerce Ministry has launched an e-marketplace for online purchase of goods and services by various central government ministries and departments.
The move is aimed at bringing in more transparency and streamlining the government procurement of goods and services. The Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) has developed the portal for the purpose. The department, which is under the Commerce Ministry, carries out the procurement.

Hospital train Lifeline Express completes 25 years of service
Lifeline Express, touted to be the world’s first hospital-train, started in 1991 to provide medical aid and relief to far-flung and inaccessible areas, completed 25 years (on18july )of its operation. The train, a flagship project of Impact India Foundation and the Indian Railways, has travelled the length and breadth of the country, the Foundation’s Trustee and Chairman Ramesh Sarin said .

Government launches Transforming India portal
With the aim of sharing the impact of various governance initiatives with citizens in real-time, the government has launched a website — ‘Transforming India’ –The website was launched by Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology and Law and Justice, Ravi Shankar Prasad. The website, www.transformingindia.mygov.in, will provide information in a user-friendly format enabling citizens to view the content in the form of infographics, e-books, performance dashboard, videos, daily news corner, and engage with the content by comments and sharing the content through social media.

More Than 47000 Mizoram Students Receive Central Scholarships
Mizoram’s Scholarship Board Secretary JH Zoremthanga has said that 90 % of tribal scholarship has been issued to the meritorious students and the Central government has directly deposited the amount to the respective account of the students. As many as 47,685 students who are in standard 1st to 10th have so far received scholarship. However, there was some mistake while depositing scholarship as in some cases the student was given an amount more than what he has to receive and in other case the student received less than what he should get.

BHEL commissions 40-MW hydro power unit in West Bengal
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully commissioned the third unit of the 4×40 MW Teesta Low Dam Hydro Electric Project (HEP) Stage-IV in West Bengal. A run-of-the-river greenfield project located in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, Teesta HEP is being set up by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), on the River Teesta.

Dabur and DRDO unit tie up for high altitude medicinal plants
Leading Ayurvedic FMCG firm Dabur has tied up with DRDO to promote sustainable cultivation of high-altitude medicinal plants in Ladakh. Dabur India has signed a pact with DRDOs unit Defense Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), Leh, under which both organisations will educate farmers and help enhance livelihood opportunities in the cold desert area.

The Union Cabinet under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has been apprised of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between India and Tunisia for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy.

Terrapin acquires Yatra Online for $218 mn
Indian travel agency Yatra Online, Inc has entered into a merger agreement with Terrapin 3 Acquisition Corp (TRTL), a Nasdaq-listed special purpose acquisition firm, The transaction values Yatra at an enterprise value of $218 million (Rs 1,458 crore). As per the terms of the merger, the combined entity aims to be listed as YTRA on Nasdaq.The current shareholders of Yatra will hold at least 35% of the issued and outstanding shares in the new merged entity and $100 million cash will be allocated to its books.

NASA’s Next Mars Rover Progresses Toward 2020 Launch
After an extensive review process and passing a major development milestone, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is ready to proceed with final design and construction of its next Mars rover, currently targeted to launch in the summer of 2020 and arrive on the Red Planet in February 2021.
This mission marks a significant milestone in NASA’s Journey to Mars – to determine whether life has ever existed on Mars, and to advance our goal of sending humans to the Red Planet.

Misbah-ul-Haq becomes oldest captain to score Test hundred
The one thing constant in the turmoil that is known as Pakistan cricket is Misbah-ul-Haq. Once again he proved how important he is to this fragile Pakistan batting line-up by compiling a masterful century in his first Test innings in England, at the age of 42years and 47days . He received good company from Asad Shafiq who scored 73 while putting up 148 for the fifth wicket before falling in the far end of the day.
