Emirates named world’s best airline in 2016 Skytrax awards
Emirates was named the world’s best airline at the prestigious Skytrax World Airline Awards 2016.The Dubai carrier also won the world’s best inflight entertainment award for a record 12th consecutive year, and best airline in the Middle East.
This is the 4th time Emirates has earned the top plum since Skytrax introduced the airline awards 15 years ago: the carrier won the first in 2001, again in 2002 and in 2013. In total, Emirates has won a total of 20 Skytrax World Airline Awards since 2001.

Grand Master Harika Dronavalli wins Fide Women’s Grand Prix trophy in China
India’s Grand Master Harika Dronavalli held on to her nerves to capture the Fide Women’s Grand Prix trophy in Chendu in China .Harika, playing with white against Russia’s Olga Girya, won her maiden career GP title. Harika finished on 7 points in the round robin tournament featuring the world’s top 12 players to be crowned the champion.

Mahindra Aerostructures bags supply contract from Airbus
Mahindra Aerostructures, a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra is the 1st Indian company to receive a contract from European aviation major Airbus HelicoptersAirbus Helicopters as Tier I supplier.
Airbus Helicopters has entered into an agreement with Mahindra Aerostructures for the production of airframe parts for the AS565 MBe Panther. This agreement is a part of a long term ‘Make in India’ partnership .

IAS Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi appointed CBSE Chairman
After an almost two-year wait during which some candidates selected by the human resource development ministry failed to pass muster, the government has appointed Rajesh Kumar Chaturvedi as chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). He will play a key role in India’s skill development mission, given the government’s plan to assimilate vocational training with school education.

Mohamed Asim, new Foreign Minister of Maldives
President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appointed Dr. Mohamed Asim as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Asim took the oath of office, at a ceremony held at the President’s Office. The oath was administered by Supreme Court Judge Uz. Abdulla Areef.
The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 coral atolls, which are made up of hundreds of islands.It’s known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs.

Cabinet approves the Revised Cost Estimate of Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan
The Union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave its approval for revised cost estimates of Rs 7,290.62 crore for the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project (HEP) in Bhutan.The total cost escalation for the project, at this stage, is Rs 3,512.82 crore.
The Hydroelectric project seeks to provide surplus power to India and thus augment power availability in the country.

Cabinet allocates Rs 12,000 crore for skilling 1 crore youth
Union Cabinet has approved the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) to impart skill training to one crore people over the next 4 years(2016-2020), Rs 12,000 crore has been allocated for this yojana. PMKVY will impart fresh training to 60 lakh youth and certify 40 lakh people who have acquired skills non-formally under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Union Government notifies AADHAR Act giving UIDAI legal basis
The Union Government has notified the UIDAI (Terms and Conditions of Service of Chairperson and Members) Rules, 2016 to give legal shapeto Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
These rules have been framed as per provisions of Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016. for appointment of its chairperson and members.

BHEL commissions 250 MW power plant in Gujarat
State-owned power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully commissioned 250 MW unit based on eco-friendly Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) technology, using low quality coal (lignite) as the primary fuel.
The 250 MW lignite based thermal unit has been commissioned at Bhavnagar Energy Company Limited (BECL)’s 2×250 MW thermal power project, located at Padva village in Bhavnagar District of Gujarat.

Union Cabinet approves revival of defunct Fertilizer Units in Gorakhpur, Sindri and Barauni
The Cabinet approved the revival of these three closed fertiliser units, with a capacity of 1.27 million tonnes per annum each at an estimated cost of Rs 18,000 crore to make India self-sufficient in urea output.
To enhance the production of urea indigenously, Govt. had earlier also approved the revival of Talcher (Odisha) & Ramagundam (Telangana) units of FCIL by PSUs through ‘nomination route’.

Government allows SEZ units to import solid plastic waste to recycle
Government has allowed companies located in special economic zones (SEZs) to import solid plastic waste. The Environment Ministry has permitted the import by amending the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016.
The government had notified ‘Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules, 2016’ in April for better management, handling and trans-boundary movement of hazardous and other wastes.

Government sets up panel to consider minimum support price (MSP)
To address the issue of escalating prices of pulses, the Union government set up a high-level committee headed by Chief Economic Adviser Arvind Subramanian to consider a “reasonable increase” in minimum support price (MSP) for pulses and bonus for farmers. The committee will submit its report in two weeks.
Prices will come down in the next 2-3 months. According to the Agriculture Ministry’s report, pulse output is expected to go up to 20 million tonnes this year. This is higher than last year’s production of 17 million tones.

World Youth Skills Day- 15th july

HAL and Safran to set up support centre for armed forces’ helicopters
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and French firm Safran Helicopter Engines have agreed to establish a support centre in India for national and international rotorcraft customers. The centre will provide maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services for Safran TM333 and HAL Shakti engines that power HAL-built helicopters.

INS India – base depot ship of Indian Navy at New Delhi celebrates Platinum Jubilee
INS India, the base depot ship at New Delhi, celebrated its 75th anniversary on 13th July. Established as HMIS India in 1941 it was rechristened as INS India on 26 Jan 1950.The Base Depot ship (stone ship in naval parlance) has the privilege of being the Flagship of the Chief of the Naval Staff.
Started as small unit with a complement of just a handful of officers and sailors, INS India is now a major establishment in New Delhi with a plethora of duties and responsibilities. In addition, the establishment provides administrative and logistics cover to all officers and sailors borne in Naval Headquarters and other units at Delhi.

OBITUARY
Former Hockey Olympian Joe Antic passed away
Joseph Antic, a silver medallist in men’s hockey for India at the Rome Olympics, passed away quietly into history , hours after the Rio Olympics national men’s and women’s hockey squads were unveiled in New Delhi.
Antic played in the centre-half position at the 1960 Olympic Games and received the Silver medal at the Olympic Velodrome. is survived by son William and daughter Rita.He had lost his wife in 2011.
