President confers the 51st Jnanpith Award on Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee conferred the 51st Jnanpith Award on renowned  writer, Dr. Raghuveer Chaudhari  at a function held at Parliament Library Building, New Delhi.

Dr. Chaudhari represents the fluid brilliance that characterizes India’s pluralistic literary genius. It is indeed an example of his brilliant fluidity that an author, who strove to master Hindi academically, expressed himself in Gujarati in his literary pursuit.

He was awarded with the India’s highest literary honour carrying a cash prize, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of Goddess Saraswati for the year 2015.

APPOINTMENTS

D Rajkumar appointed CMD of BPCL; Utpal Bora to head Oil India

D Rajkumar has been appointed as the new Chairman and Managing Director at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, while Utpal Bora will be the Oil India Ltd. These two appointments were issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) .

At present, Rajkumar is working as the Managing Director at Bharat Petro Resources Ltd, unit of BPCL focused on exploration and production. And Bora is the Executive Director in Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) Limited. They have been appointed to the posts for five-year term. Rajkumar will take over the charge on or after October 1, 2016 after retirement of BPCL’s current chief S Varadarajan in September. BPCL is a state refiner and retailer.

Tathagata Roy sworn in as Arunachal Governor

Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy has sworn in as the acting Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, in the Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan in Itanagar. With this he becomes 18th Governor to be sworn in as Governor of this Himalayan State. He has been given the additional charge of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. With this, Mr.Roy will discharge the function of the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh during the absence on leave of Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa.

First woman Chief Justice of Nepal, Sushila Karki, takes oath

After making history with the appointment of the first female head of state and speaker in the country, Nepal has made another landmark achievement in gender equality by appointing the first female chief justice of the Supreme Court. Sushila Karki has become the 1st  woman Chief Justice of Nepal after taking oath of office and secrecy at a special programme organised at the Presidential Residence, Sheetal Niwas. Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari conducted the oath of office and secrecy ceremony.

IDFC Bank acquires Grama Vidiyal Microfinance

IDFC Bank has signed a share purchase agreement with Tamil Nadu-headquartered microfinance institution Grama Vidiyal Micro Finance (GVMFL) for acquisition of 100 % equity share capital of GVMFL in an all-cash deal.a deal is estimated at nearly Rs 300 crore.

Grama Vidiyal will become wholly-owned subsidiary of the IDFC  bank after acquisition.This is a first-of-its-kind transaction where a bank has taken over a microfinance institution (MFI) and made it a subsidiary. Prior to this , the Bank had purchased 10% stake in Dhaka –based ASA internation in January for nearly Rs8.5 cr.

Maharashtra Police Launches 4 Apps for Emergency Situations

In order to strengthen public security system, Maharashtra police has launched 4 mobile apps for timely intervention into emergency situations. The four applications PratisaadAsk, Police Mitra, Vahanchoritakrar and Railway helpline app were launched by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis a fortnight ago in Nagpur, a statement from Maharashtra Police said.

Nirma to buy Lafarge India assets from LafargeHolcim for $1.4 billion

Swiss cement giant LafargeHolcim today announced agreement for sale of its assets in Lafarge India to soaps and chemicals maker Nirma ltd for $1.4 billion (about Rs 9,400 crore).The deal is subjected to approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) also the proceeds from the divestment will be used to reduce debt.

Union Government launches Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight(IDCF)

On the directions of the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri J P Nadda, Ministry of Health launched nationwide Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight (IDCF). it  will be observed from 11th to 23rd July across the country under which various activities has been planned including visits by ASHA workers to all such households which have children under the age of five.

Japanese election: Shinzo Abe declares victory

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has declared victory in election, with his ruling coalition winning a majority of seats in Japan’s upper house. Together with the pro-constitutional revisionists, his coalition has gained a two-thirds majority of the 121-seat upper house. Abe’s junior coalition partner, Komeito, fared well, winning 14 seats compared with nine before the election.

China Navy conducts combat drill in the South China sea

China’s navy has conducted a routine combat drill in waters off the Hainan and Xisha Islands. The Nanhai Fleet, as well as forces from the Beihai and Donghai fleets, have taken part in the annual exercise in the South China Sea. The drills come on the heels of the announcement  by the United States and South Korea to deploy a THAAD missile defense system in South Korea.

Malala Day –12th july

Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai, who became a target of Taliban in October 2012 and defied death after a serious gunshot injury, turned 19-year-old ,In recognition of her bravery and in honour of her heroic stand to ensure education for all, the United Nations in 2013 declared that July 12 will be annually observed as “Malala Day” worldwide.

Bihar signs MoU with Bangkok firm for disaster risk reduction

As part of programmes to implement the Roadmap for Disaster Risk Reduction in Bihar (2015-30), the state government signed an MoU with Bangkok-based Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC).Chief minister Nitish Kumar said The move will help reduce disaster risk management in the state. The MoU was signed by the ADPC executive director Jingjai Hanchanlash and state Disaster Management Department principal secretary Vyasji.

Google to train 2 mn Android developers in India

Tech giant  Google  launched the ‘Android Skilling’ program in India that will aim to train 2 million Android app developers over the next 3 years to cash in on the high-quality talent pool in the country. The new certification program will unveil a slew of initiatives to skill, educate, and certify millions of students and developers in Android  Development, This will be made available across public, private universities and training institutes of the National Skill Development Corporation of India.

DoT clears Rs 3,500 cr. Airtel-Aircel 4G deal

Airtel has entered into an agreement with Aircel to acquire rights to use 4G spectrum of Aircel in 8 telecom circles these circles are  Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Assam, the North-East, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.The spectrum trading deal between Bharti Airtel and Aircel was cleared by the telecom minister.

The development comes even as the department of telecommunications (DoT) has cleared Maxis-owned Aircel’s sale of airwaves in the 2300 MHz band in 8 circles to Airtel for Rs 3,500 crore.

SPORTS

Portugal crowned Euro 2016 champions

Portugal has won the 2016 UEFA European football championship (Euro Cup 2016) at Saint-Denis in Paris by defeating  France by 1-0 goal score. It is Portugal’s 1st  UEFA European Championship title.

For the first time, the European Championship final tournament was being contested by 24 teams, having been expanded from the 16-team format used since 1996. Euro 2016 was the 15th edition of UEFA European football championship 2016.
