Nimi Sunilkumar wins Gourmand World Cookbook Award

Nimi Sunilkumar, cookbook author and food blogger, has presented this repository of snacks to the world, and been rewarded with a Gourmand World Cookbook Award for 2015-16. Her book 4 o’clock Temptations of Kerala has been chosen for the award in the ‘Best Indian Cuisine Cookbook’ section. The book emerged a winner, competing with entries on Indian cuisine from around the world. The award was presented in Yantai, China.

Former climate chief Christiana Figueres nominated for UN top post

Costa Rica nominated former United Nations climate chief Christiana Figueres to be the next U.N. Secretary-General, making her the 12th candidate to enter the race ahead of the first Security Council secret ballot .

  • “The United Nations, and the world, needs a Secretary-General who is a bridge builder, who can listen and consult, who can help resolve disputes, build agreements and anticipate problems. Christiana Figueres has proven to be that person,” said Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis.
  • Christiana Figueres, the UN official who helped steer the Paris climate change accord to success in December, has entered the race to succeed Ban Ki-moon as the organisation’s next secretary-general.

RBI permits foreign investors to buy PNB shares

The RBI removed the 7 year old restriction on fresh purchase of state-owned Punjab National Bank’s shares by foreign investors.

Punjab National Bank (PNB) shares gained over 8 per cent .after the Reserve Bank of India removed the public sector bank from the caution list and allowed foreign investors to buy its shares. The scrip later closed 8.21 per cent up at Rs 127.25.

Hemis festival to begin in India on July 14

The Hemis festival will be held between July 14 and July 15 at the Hemis Monastery in Ladakh. This is an extremely well-known festival. Hemis festival 2016 or Hemis Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa Lineage, located in Hemis, Ladakh Situated 45 km from Leh, the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal.

Govt imposes anti-dumping duty on a chemical from 5 countries

Revenue Department has slapped anti-dumping duty of up to USD 168.76 per tonne on import of a chemical used in textile industry from five countries, including China, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan, to protect domestic manufacturers. The import restrictive tax has been imposed for five years by the Revenue Department on recommendations of the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD).

World Bank to extend $290 mn credit for Bihar’s JEEViKA II

The Centre and the Bihar government have signed a $290 million credit agreement with the World Bank under the state’s rural development project ‘JEEViKA-II’. The new project would cover 300 new blocks in 32 districts. Bihar Transformative Development Project, also known as Jeevika II, will mobilise rural population into self-help groups (SHG) and higher level federations and help them gain access to markets, public services and a range of financial services from formal financial institutions, the World Bank said.

National Banana Research Centre to be set up in Bihar

The National Research Centre for Banana would be set up at Goraul in Bihar’s Vaishali districtUnion Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh announced this, who was accompanied by Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, while inaugurating a two-day ‘Horti-Sangam’ 2016 organised by National Horticulture Board at Hajipur, the district headquarters of Vaishali. Farmers from more than a dozen states put fruits, vegetables, flowers and processed items on display and for sale at the event.

IUCN declares Bornean orangutan critically endangered

The Bornean orangutan is now listed as critically endangered. With this update, both species of orangutan (the other being Sumatran) are now at extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published an assessment that found hunting, habitat destruction and degradation, and habitat fragmentation to be the biggest drivers of Bornean orangutan population loss.

Hamilton wins 3rd straight British Grand Prix

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix for the third year in a row. It is his overall 4th British Grand Prix title after winning it in 2008, 2014 and 2015. It was also his 4th title of the 2016 season after Monaco Grand Prix , Canadian Grand Prix  and Austrian Grand Prix. Rosberg in the other Mercedes was left to battle back to second past the Red Bull of the impressive Max Verstappen.

Williams sisters win their sixth Wimbledon title

The American siblings “Serena and Venus Williams” won their 6 Wimbledon doubles championship and 14th Grand Slam title as a pair.by defeating fifth-seeded Timea Babos of Hungary and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-4, in London, England. Serena heads home from the All England Club with two trophies: The doubles final started a little more than 3 hours after she beat Angelique Kerber for the singles championship.

Gordon Reid secures first ever Wimbledon wheelchair singles title

Great Britain’s Gordon Reid landed his Second Wimbledon title of the weekend with a brilliant victory in the tournament’s first wheelchair singles event. He completed his  mission by becoming the Wimbledon champion. His 6-1, 6-4 win over Stefan Olsson of Sweden gave him a second grand slam singles title.

  • The 24-year-old Reid won his first Australian Open title in January, after which he immediately set his sights on Wimbledon.
  • Reid, who was confined to a wheelchair 12 years ago after contracting Transverse Myelitis, a neurological condition affecting the spine.
