WITH recurrence of unruly affairs at Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri creating serious public outrage, the Odisha Government on Thursday constituted a one-man judicial commission to suggest reforms in its management.
- The commission will be headed by retired judge of Orissa High Court Justice Bimal Prasad Das. He would be assisted by former temple administrator Mahimohan Tripathy.
- “The commission will give suggestions on disciplined rituals, darshan for devotees, training and education to servitors, conservation of heritage and propagation of Jagannath culture,” said Law Minister Arun Sahu .
- Officials sources said the government was forced to constitute the judicial commission after the Puri district collector was manhandled by a section of servitors when he had opposed a family member of a servitor from climbing upon Taladhawaj, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra.
- Invoking Sri Jagannath Temple (Administration) Act, 1952, the Government said the judicial panel’s terms of reference (ToR) will include a review of security structure at the 12th-century temple in view of threats posed from terror outfits.
