Nisid Hajari wins 2016 Colby Award for Best Military Book

Nisid Hajari has won the 2016 William E. Colby Award for his book, “Midnight’s Furies: The Deadly Legacy of India’s Partition.” Now in its 17th year, the Colby prize is awarded annually by Norwich University to a first-time author in recognition of a work of fiction or non-fiction that has made a major contribution to the understanding of military history, intelligence operations or international affairs.

Nitish Kumar selected for K Veeramani Social Justice Award

Nitish Kumar has been chosen for the K Veeramani Award for Social Justice 2015 for his contribution towards social justice as Chief Minister. The award is given away by Periyar International, a Chicago-based voluntary organisation. The date and venue of the award function are yet to be decided. During his visit to Delhi in the first week of February, Nitish would meet some members of the award committee and take a call on the venue, from among Patna, Delhi and Chennai.

Prince Mahidol Award for 2015 announced

The Prince Mahidol Award Foundation has named an American professor as the winner of the Prince Mahidol Award 2015 in the field of medicine and a British researcher as the winner in the field of public health.

APPOINTMENTS

Vice Admiral Girish Luthra Assumes Command of Southern Naval Command

Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, AVSM, VSM, took over charge as the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command from Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, PVSM, AVSM.  Vice Admiral Luthra laid wreath at the War Memorial, prior to assuming command, as a tribute to the thousands of martyrs who had fought for the country. The Flag Officer, a native of Palwal in Haryana, who was the Vice Chief of Naval Staff prior to taking over as the FOC-in-C (South), had arrived in Kochi on 29 Jan 16.

New Secretary Level Appointments

Telecom secretary Rakesh Garg has been appointed secretary of the minority affairs ministry as part of a top-level bureaucratic reshuffle, 10 months ahead of his retirement. JS. Deepak has been appointed as the new secretary, department of telecommunications. Deepak, a 1982 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, is at present secretary, department of electronics and information technology.

GDP growth for 2014-15 marginally revised down to 7.2%

Government of India has marginally revised downward the economic growth for 2014-15 to 7.2 per cent from the earlier estimate of 7.3 per cent after factoring in latest data on agriculture and industrial production. As per the Central Statistics Office‘s (CSO) revised estimates the real GDP or GDP at constant (2011-12) prices for the years 2014-15 and 2013-14 stands at Rs 105.52 lakh crore and Rs 98.39 lakh crore, respectively, showing growth of 7.2 per cent during 2014-15, and 6.6 per cent during 2013-14. GDP growth rate for 2013-14 has also revised downwards to 6.6 per cent from earlier estimate of 6.9 per cent.

Ahmedabad nominated for UNESCO heritage city tag

The Government of India has decided to nominate Ahmedabad for the UNESCO world heritage city tag this year. January 30 is the last date for countries to send their nominations to UNESCO for the title, results of which will be announced in June 2017, and the government has confirmed that Ahmedabad, and not Delhi or Mumbai, is its pick. Recently, the Delhi government had written to the Culture Ministry to resend Delhi’s nomination, which was abruptly “put on hold” last year. On the other hand, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and actor Amitabh Bachchan wrote to Sharma and PM Narendra Modi, respectively, to push for Mumbai this time.

Alibaba’s first Indian trade facility centre opens

Alibaba.com, the wholesale trading platform of China’s Alibaba group today unveiled its first physical trade facility centre in the country at Jaipur and a Hindi portal, aimed at connecting small and medium businesses with global buyers. By providing information and services in Hindi, the site will enable Indian traders, especially those from small cities and rural areas, to easily connect with merchants worldwide.

Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his martyrdom day

On the 68th death anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi, the nation paid homage to the Father of the Nation. The people of India paid homage to Gandhi on martyrdom day when he was assassinated on January 30, 1948. Programmes will be organised across the country to mark the occasion. All-religion prayers will be held in Rajghat at Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, and the three service Chiefs will lay wreaths at the memorial of Gandhi. Prayers will also be offered at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on his death anniversary.

Jet Airways launches booking feature “Fare Lock”

Jet Airways, India’s premier airline, has introduced a new booking feature called ‘Fare lock’, which allows the passengers the flexibility to retain a selected fare for a limited period of time before confirming the purchase at a later date. Once a passenger selects the FareLock option, he will need to pay a nominal fee for availing the same. The fee is Rs. 350 for domestic flights and Rs. 700 for an international ticket to “lock the fare”.

Dr Reddy’s gets USFDA nod for migraine drug

Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has received the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) nod for ZembraceSymTouch (sumatriptan succinate) injection, a drug-device combination product intended for the treatment of acute migraine in adults. The product is available as a pre-filled, ready-to-use, single-dose disposable auto-injector containing 3 mg of sumatriptan. The injection is intended to be given subcutaneously .

Kerber beats Serena to win first Grand Slam title

Germany’s Angelique Kerber stunned world number one Serena Williams in three sets to win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Kerber, seeded seventh, won a thrilling final 6-4 3-6 6-4 at Melbourne Park. The 28-year-old is the first German to win a major singles title since Steffi Graf at the 1999 French Open. Williams, 34, was beaten for just the fifth time in 26 Grand Slam finals, and the American missed the chance to tie Graf’s open-era record of 22 titles.

OBITUARY

Former Chief of Army staff KV Krishna Rao passes away

Former Army Chief General KV Krishna Rao, who played a key role in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, has died due to cardiac arrest at the age of 92. Rao also served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir at a time when militancy was at its peak in the state. Rao was the 14th Chief of the Army Staff of Indian Army and had an illustrious career spanning over four decades in the force. He was commissioned into the Army on August 9, 1942.
