INDIAN AFFAIRS

1. Inter-ministerial panel for coal gas to be set up soon

The government of India is all set up an inter-ministerial panel for the development of underground coal gasification in coal and lignite bearing areas. The eight-member panel under the chairmanship of Additional Secretary Coal will have members from ministries such as Petroleum and Natural Gas. The panel would also have members from Niti Aayog and Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI). The Union Cabinet has approved a policy for developing Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in coal and lignite bearing areas in the country.

2. GOI constitute Kamlesh Chandra Committee to study wage structure of Gramin Dak Sevaks

The government has constituted a one-man committee to examine the wage structure and service conditions of gramin dak sevaks. The Department of Posts has 2.6 lakh gramin dak sevaks. Kamlesh Chandra, a retired member of the postal services board, will constitute the committee, which will be assisted by TQ Mohammad, a senior administrative grade officer, who will act as secretary. The terms of reference of the Committee will include the following.

3. Govt announces Direct Benefit Transfer scheme for kerosene subsidy

The government announced the launch of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for kerosene subsidy in a bid to cut down the diversion and black marketing of the fuel.

The new scheme will be rolled out in 26 districts across eight states from 1 April, 2016 including Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan. The centre has allocated 86.85 lakh kilolitres of subsidised PDS kerosene to states in the current financial year even as total annual consumption stands at 71.3 lakh kilolitres.

ENVIRONMENT

4. Oasis Group to invest Rs 500 crore for setting up ethanol plant

Oasis Group is planning to invest Rs 500 crore for establishing a wheat-based ethanol plant with capacity of 5 lakh litres per day at Ferozepur in Punjab.

At present, mostly sugar mills are producing ethanol in the country, which is being sold to the petroleum companies.

5. Corp Bank gets NPCI awards

Corporation Bank has bagged three awards at the ‘National Payments Excellence Awards 2015’ event recently. The function was organised by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

The bank said in a release that these awards were instituted for recognition of exceptional performance of member banks.

6. No interviews: PSBs to strengthen exam for clerical posts

Finance Ministry has asked Public Sector Banks (PSBs) to strengthen written examination for recruitment of clerical and sub-staff posts as there will be no interviews for such appointments.

The decision to change the recruitment process follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s directive that there was no need for holding interviews for lower level posts.

OBITUARY

7. Former Punjab Assembly Speaker H D Johar passes away

Congress leader and former Speaker of Punjab Assembly Harnam Dass Johar passed away due to old-age related ailments at the age of 83. Mr. Johar was cremated with state honours at Model Town area. Expressing grief over the demise of the former Punjab minister, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in his condolence message said Johar always conducted proceedings of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha with impartiality and performed his duties as minister with absolute ability.

8. Communist Party Of India Leader AB Bardhan Dies At 92

Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Ardhendu Bhushan Bardhan passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was 92.

Mr Bardhan has been a leading figure of the trade union movement and Left politics in Maharashtra and a key figure in fostering relations between the Congress-led UPA and the Left in the early 2000s. Mr Bardhan entered the electoral politics in 1957 when he won as an Independent candidate in Maharashtra Assembly polls but there failed to achieve success in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha polls.

9. India wins SAFF cup for the seventh time

India defeated Afghanistan 2-1 to clinch the SAFF Cup for the seventh time. Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua scored for hosts after Zubayr Amiri gave the defending champions the lead. The Indian team has exacted a sweet revenge of their last edition defeat. India lost to Afghanistan 0-2 in the final of 2013 edition in Kathmandu. Jeje Lalpekhlua (72nd minute) and Sunil Chhetri (101th) scored for India after Zubayr Amiri had given Afghanistan the lead in the 69th minute at the Greenfield Stadium.
