Dinesh Sharma elected to board of directors of AIIB
India, one of the founding members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), has been elected to the board of directors of the China-sponsored AIIB, which is expected to begin loan approvals before the end of this year. Dinesh Sharma, Additional Secretary of Ministry of Finance has been elected to the 12-member board for which a secret ballot was held. This will be the first board of directors for the new bank in which 57 members joined as founding members.

IOC begins petrol production from Paradip refinery
Indian Oil Corporation’s latest refinery in Paradip, Odisha, the first in over a decade for the nation’s largest fuel major, started production of petrol from the Rs. 34,555-crore facility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the 15 MMTPA Paradip Refinery, which will primarily be producing BS-IV fuels and serving the eastern and south-eastern markets apart from exports, to the nation on February 7.

IIT Kharagpur launches innovation centre
IIT Kharagpur has launched an innovation centre to promote the culture of innovation among its undergraduate students right from their first year. Named after its alumnus and former faculty, the MN Faruqui Innovations Centre was launched on Saturday with seed-funding by another alumnus Arjun Malhotra, the co-founder of HCL Technologies. The centre would promote the culture of innovation among a wide cross section of students and faculty with support from its alumni and the industry.

National Conference on ‘Sustainable Agriculture, Farmer’s Welfare’
The two-day National Conference on “Sustainable Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare” has began in Sikkim on January 17, 2016. The conference is being attended by state government representatives, scientists, academicians, bankers, experts and practitioners. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the conference on 18th January and he will be the chief guest at the plenary session of the conference. Union Agriculture Minister and several State Ministers for Agriculture will also be attending the conference.

World Bank sanctioned funds for restoration Indira Gandhi Zoological Park
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam will be funded $7 million for restoration and development as a world-class international ecological park by the World Bank. This is for the first time that the World Bank will be funding a zoo. Indira Gandhi Zoological Park in Visakhapatnam was heavily damaged by the cyclone Hudhud in 2014. The four coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and East Godavari are expected to get $20 million for forest restoration and disaster prevention measures.

Zinnia : The first flower ever grown in space
The first flower has finally bloomed in outer space. Nasa astronaut Scott Kelly has tweeted a photo of the first ever flower (Zinnia) grown in space. The flower was grown as part of an experiment astronauts are conducting on how plants grow in microgravity. Besides the flower, the team also grew lettuce in space, after a failed first attempt. Despite fears of over-watering, the crew coaxed the zinnias into a burst of colour in their zero-g vegetable garden. Zinnias are edible blooming plants that are usually on the easy ends in the spectrum to grow.

Chinese bioartificial liver set to save lives
Chinese scientists have developed a new bioartificial liver that they say will help people suffering from organ failure to live longer. Designed to be attached outside the patient’s body, the device makes use of human liver cells. In its first clinical use last week, the device “saved a 61-year-old woman who was dying from acute liver failure,” said Professor Ding Yitao, a member of the research team.

Popov claims 14th Delhi International Open chess title
Russia’s Ivan Popov suffered a surprise last-round loss but was not to be denied the 14th Delhi International Open chess title. Popov claimed the winner’s trophy and Rs. three lakh. Ukraine’s Valeriy Neverov inflicted a 43-move defeat with white pieces to force a three-way tie at eight points. But Popov clinched the title on a superior tie-break score ahead of runner-up Hungarian Attila Czebe and third-placed Neverov. In fact, Vitaly Sivuk did Popov a favour by holding Czebe in 30 moves on the second board. After Popov’s loss, a victory for Czebe would have given him the title. M.R. Lalith Babu justified his presence in the event as the highest-rated Indian and defeated Ukraine’s Yuri Solodovnichenko in 68 moves to be among the six players tied for the fourth spot with 7.5 points.

Team India regains top spot in latest ICC Test rankings
Indian Test team led by Virat Kohli has climbed to the top of the International Cricket Council ’s Test Rankings after South Africa crashed to a 0-2 series defeat against England in Johannesburg. India, who lost their top ranking to England after their 0-4 whitewash in 2011, got back to the pinnacle by virtue of their crushing 3-0 series win against the Proteas at home, last December. India now have 110 ranking points and have one point more than Australia, who are second in the list with 109 points.

Virat Kohli becomes fastest to 24 ODI centuries
Virat Kohli became the fastest to register 24 hundreds and pile up 7,000 runs in one-day cricket, surpassing the twin milestones in just his 161st innings. The top-order batsman got the better of the Australian bowling attack with a run-a-ball knock that was studded with seven fours and two sixes. Kohli, who has been in top form recently, had scores of 91 and 59 in the first two ODIs. Coming into this match, he needed only 19 to overtake AB de Villiers, who reached the landmark in 172 matches and 166 innings.

OBITUARY
Former Sikkim governor Rama Rao passes away
BJP veteran and former governor of Sikkim Ventrapragada Rama Rao (81) has died while undergoing treatment for severe lung infection. He was hospitalised about a month ago. Rama Rao is survived by wife and a son.

Punjabi singer Manpreet Akhtar dies
Punjabi folk singer Manpreet Akhtar died due to brain hemorrhage at a local hospital in Patiala. She was 55. Manpreet was known for her classical style of singing and she sang songs in Punjabi and Hindi movies. Some of her famous Punjabi songs were Beriye Ni, Nikdi sui and Bas Ek Gera Gidhe Vich. She also sang Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aye in Bollywood movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Manpreet was the sister of famous Punjabi singer Dilshad Akhtar. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed profound grief over the demise of Manpreet.
