Indian Army Day is celebrated on January 15 in recognition of Lieutenant General Kodendara Madappa Cariappa’s taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher. Butcher was the last British Commander-in-Chief of India.

Who is K.M.Cariappa?
- KM Cariappa was born on 28 January 1899.
- He was the first Commander in chief of Indian Army. Kipper was his nickname.
- He served on World War – II and Indo – Pakistani War.
- He was awarded Order of the British Empire, three times in mentioned in dispatches and Legion of Merit.
- After retirement he founded Indian Ex – Servicemen League (IESL) in 1964.
- He died on 15 May 1993.
