1. LPG emergency helpline number 1906 launched
Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has launched the LPG emergency helpline number 1906 for the cooking gas consumers across the country. The consumers can call on this helpline to seek assistance to deal with gas leakage. Pradhan asked the ministry and the top brass of oil marketing companies’ to make the number toll free. As for today, normal call rates will apply.

2. Kochi Metro gets first set of trains from Alstom
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd has received the first set of 25 trains for Kochi Metro from French company Alstom. The order was placed in August 2014 and the company today delivered the first set from its plant inside Sri City. The coaches have been manufactured at a tendered cost of ₹632.95 crore . All the 25 trains will be delivered by April 2017. The Union Minister for Urban Development, Parliamentary Affairs, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Venkaiah Naidu, flagged off the first train set in the presence of Aryadan Muhammed, Minister for Power and Railways, Kerala.

3. China creates three new Army units to modernise military
China has created three new military bodies as part of reforms to modernise its military and improve its fighting capacity.
State television showed on Saturday President Xi Jinping giving military flags to the leaders of the three new units — a general command for the People’s Liberation Army, a missile force and a strategic support force. Mr. Xi and PLA officers and soldiers sang the national anthem at the inauguration ceremony.
Mr. Xi said the three new units had been created as part of a modernisation reform and “to realise the Chinese dream of a strong military”.

4. India, Pakistan exchange list of nuke installations, prisoners
India and Pakistan today exchanged a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral agreement that bars them from attacking each other’s atomic facilities. The two countries also exchanged, through diplomatic channels simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the lists of nationals (including civil prisoners and fishermen) of each country lodged in their respective jails.

5. Mahindra inaugurates bio-CNG plant
Mahindra & Mahindra on inaugurated a bio-CNG facility here to create carbon neutral ecosystem at Mahindra World City (MWC).
Spread over 1,000 square metres, the facility will convert eight tonnes of food and kitchen waste generated daily at MWC, into 1,000m3 of raw biogas, Mahindra & Mahindra said in a statement.

6. Replace defective 1,000-rupee notes: RBI to Banks
Out of 300 million defective banknotes that were printed in one of the printing presses of government-owned Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India, about 100 million of those notes have hit the market leaving the general public in a tizzy. About 200 million pieces were transferred to the RBI’s currency chests, some of which was then loaded in banks’ automated teller machines.

7. Rupee among best of Asian currencies in 2015
The currency’s depreciation of about five per cent against the dollar was less than the losses of most of its other Asian peers. The Indian rupee fared better in 2014, when it weakened by only two per cent. However, the rupee fared much better despite a pullout by foreign funds from the emerging markets, including India, as an interest rate hike was expected from the U.S. Federal Reserve.

8. PNB launches host of digital banking solutions
The Android app facilitates the customer to use GPS and reach the nearest PNB ATM, it also assists customer to instantly lodge operational issues, reducing the resolution time considerably, PNB MD Usha Ananthasubramanian said. Green PIN facility was also launched under which customer can obtain duplicate PIN for debit card instantly through SMS request, it said.

9. Royal Enfield records 50% sales growth in 2015
Royal Enfield has recorded yet another year of stunning growth. The iconic Bullet maker, which is part of Eicher Motors, has registered 50 per cent growth in its total sales at 4.5 lakh units for the calendar year 2015.

10. Netflix set to launch in India
Popular online streaming service Netflix is likely to launch in India next week during the trade show CES 2016. The website was planning to enter the Asian nations soon with Singapore and Hong Kong.
It is believed that the U.S.-based company has partnered with an Indian Telecom company to leverage 4G networks. In India, Airtel is the sole provider of 4G network. Reliance will also be launching 4G services but as of now the services are only extended to its employees.

11. Singer Natalie Cole dies at 65
Multiple Grammy-winner Natalie Cole, best known for the songs “Unforgettable”, “Inseparable” and “This Will Be,” has died. She was 65. The singer-songwriter died on Thursday, December 31 in a Los Angeles hospital due to “complications from ongoing health issues,” her publicist Maureen O’Connor confirmed, said The Hollywood Reporter. She was supposed to perform for New Year’s Eve concert at Disney Hall in LA but she cancelled all commitments a month ahead due to illness.

12. Jaya launches ‘Amma seeds’ scheme for farmers
Implementing an announcement made in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2014 for farmers’ welfare, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has launched the scheme ‘Amma Seeds’ which is aimed at providing quality seeds.
In an official release here, the state government said Jayalalithaa had recently launched the scheme by giving away seeds to three farmers here. She had proposed the scheme in 2014, saying quality, certified ‘Amma Seeds’ would be available through ‘Amma Service Centres’ across the state.

13. BCCI Annual Awards announced
The winners of Annual BCCI Awards have been announced. India’s Test captain Virat Kohli will be presented Polly Umrigar Award, given to the cricketer of the year, at the Annual BCCI Awards Ceremony in Mumbai on January 5, 2016.
This is the second time that Kohli will be honoured with the Polly Umrigar Award, after winning it in 2011-12. The previous two winners of the prestigious award are pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2013-14) and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (2012-13).

14. India’s Petronet LNG ink revised contract with RasGas of Qatar
India’s biggest state owned gas importer Petronet LNG has signed a revised contract with RasGas of Qatar to import gas at a significantly lower price than earlier. Under the new contract, Rasgas will supply Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to Petronet at 6-7 dollar per million British thermal units (mmBtu) from January 1, 2016. It would supply to 7.5 million tonnes of LNG India until the long-term contract ending in April 2028 The new rate is sharply lower than 12-13 dollar per mmbtu agreed earlier and has been revised after falling global prices of oil and gas, saving consumers around Rs.4,000 crore.

15. Vocalist Sanjay Subrahmanyam Awarded 2015 Sangita Kalanidhi Award
Renowned south Indian classical vocalists Sanjay Subrahmanyam has been awarded with prestigious 2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award. The prestigious award was bestowed upon him by renowned mathematician Manjul Bhargava at 89th annual conference of the Madras Music Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Subrahmanyam became seventh artistes to be presented with this award before completing 50 years of age.

16. Air Marshal R K Singh Bhadauria takes over as Deputy Chief of Air Staff
Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria has took over as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, a post that oversees the critical procurement process of the force. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Bhadauria was commissioned in the IAF in June 1980. Prior to taking over as DCAS, Air Marshal Bhadauria was Senior Air Staff Officer at Central Air Command of IAF.

17. 1976 Olympic boxer Howard Davis Jr of US dies at 59
Olympic champion boxer Howard Davis Jr, who won the 1976 gold medal and was named over US teammate Sugar Ray Leonard as the most outstanding fighter in the Montreal Games, has died of cancer.
His diagnosis of stage four lung cancer in February just before his birthday came as a shock because he had never smoked. The cancer spread to his liver, and the family chose to discontinue treatment in a hospital this week. In the 1976 Olympics, Davis was voted the outstanding boxer, out-polling his teammates Leonard, and Michael and Leon Spinks.

18. Japanese recognized for discovering element 113
A Japanese team has received official credit for the discovery of element 113, making the group the first in Asia to have its accomplishments enshrined in the periodic table. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry certified Thursday that a team led by Kosuke Morita at government-affiliated research institute Riken discovered the element. The group first managed to synthesize it in July 2004 but could not conclusively demonstrate its existence until 2012.

19. PM unveils plaque for Foundation Stone of Delhi-Meerut Expressway
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled a plaque to mark the laying of the foundation stone of the of 74 km long Delhi-Dasna-Meerut 14 lane Expressway and upgradation of 22 Km long Dasna-Hapur section of NH-24, at Sector-62 in Noida. The Minister of Road Transport & Highway and Shipping Nitin Gadkari said that the expressway will give a big thrust to development in western Uttar Pradesh and will make travel to cities like Dehradun, Muradabad and Bareilley much faster. The Minister informed that work is already being done on 89 National Highway projects worth Rs 45,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh. Additional projects worth Rs 55,000 crore are likely to be taken up by the end of 2016.

20. China starts first nuclear reactor in ethnic minority region
The first nuclear power plant located in one of China’s ethnic autonomous regions has began commercial operations of its first reactor that will cut coal burning and CO2 emissions and can create upto 64,0000 jobs annually. The first reactor of the Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region can supply 24 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a day, catering to the needs of a medium-sized city, said Gong Guangchen, the plant’s spokesperson.
