INDIAN AFFAIRS

1. INS Kadmatt commissioned in the Indian Navy

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral RK Dhowan commissioned the second indigenous stealth Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) corvette INS Kadmatt in Visakhapatnam. It was built by M/s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) at Naval Dockyard. The Indian Navy has planned, in another 15 years, to strengthen science and technology and build warships indigenously in association with the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) and public sector shipyards and private companies. ‘Kadmatt’ will take part in international fleet review scheduled in Visakhapatnam from February 4-8.

2. Delhi government scraps management quota in private schools

The Delhi government has scrapped management quotas for admissions to private schools, a move that opens more seats for general admissions but puts the government on a collision course with the schools. There will be no reservation for children of VIP, VVIP, police, MLA and MP in private schools of Delhi. Kejriwal said it was important to remove the management quota, calling it “the biggest scam” in India’s education system.

3. Gajendra Chauhan appointed Chairman of FTII

TV actor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Gajendra Chauhan has been appointed as the Chairman of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). More than 40 students protested with banners proclaiming ‘Silent Emergency’ and ‘Tyranny of the Elected’. The agitators are being held at the Shivajinagar police station as the first meeting of the new FTII society gets underway almost six months after its reconstitution.

4. Sam Pitroda appointed as Technology advisor of Odisha Government

Eminent technocrat and former chairman of National Knowledge Commission Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda popularly known as Sam Pitroda has been appointed technology advisor to the Odisha Government. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Pitroda, who will enjoy the status of a Cabinet rank minister, will work for the development of IT sector and prepare Vision 2036 document for the State.

5. Sikh-American appointed top prosecutor in US County

A Sikh-American attorney has been appointed as the top prosecutor in the most populous county in New Jersey, becoming the first South Asian to occupy the post in the state. Gurbir Grewal, 42, was sworn in as acting Bergen County prosecutor on January 4, succeeding John Molinelli whose 14-year long tenure has ended. Grewal, a former federal prosecutor, has fought major white-collar crimes for the US Attorney’s Office and most recently served as chief of the Economic Crimes Unit in Newark.

6. Filippo Grandi takes charge as UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Filippo Grandi, a UN official who has worked in refugee and political affairs in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, began his five-year term as UN High Commissioner for Refugees on January 1, succeeding António Guterres.  Grandi, 58, who is from Italy, has worked in international affairs for over 30 years, 27 of them with the United Nations. Formerly head of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), he worked prior to that for the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) as Deputy Special Representative, following a long career first with NGOs and later with UNHCR in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and at the organization’s Geneva headquarters.

7. AB Khare appointed CMD of Madras Fertilizers

The Centre has appointed AB Khare as the Chairman and Managing Director of the state-run Madras Fertilzers for a five-year term. In August 2015, the government headhunter Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) had recommended the name of Khare for the post of CMD at Madras Fertilizers Ltd (MFL). Khare will succeed I Vijay Kumar. His name was finalised after interviewing 7 shortlisted candidates. Khare was previously working with state—owned fertiliser firm Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers as Chief General Manager (Commercial).

8. Pavan Kapoor appointed India’s new ambassador to Israel

Senior diplomat Pavan Kapoor has been appointed India’s ambassador to strategically important Israel, where he will succeed Jaideep Sarkar. Mr Kapoor, a 1990 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer, is currently India’s High Commissioner in Mozambique capital Maputo. The appointment assumes significance as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to visit India this year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also pay a return visit to Tel Aviv.

9. India to grow at a faster 7.8 percent in fiscal 2016-17: World Bank

The World Bank has projected that India will grow by a robust 7.8 per cent in 2016 and 7.9 per cent in the next two years. World Bank also predicted that India will be the fastest growing economy in the world in the next three years and would outpace China. With the recent fall in oil prices, India remains the bright spot of the global economy as Chinese growth is predicted to slow further.

10. Priyanka Chopra bags award at People’s Choice Awards for ‘Quantico’

Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra has bagged the favourite actress in new TV series honour at the 2016 People Choice Awards for her performance of an FBI recruit on American showQuantico. Priyanka becomes the first Indian actor to register a win at the People Choice Awards. She beat popular Hollywood and TV actresses like Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele and Marcia Gay Harden to bag the award. The 33-year-old actress took to Twitter to thank her fans, who voted for her. Hollywood actor Vin Diesel presented her the award

11. Apurvi Chandela sets world record; wins Swedish Grand Prix

Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela broke the world record on way to winning gold in the women’s 10 metre air rifle event at the Swedish Cup Grand Prix. Chandela shot 211.2 in the event to surpass the feat of Chinese Olympic gold medallist Yi Siling, who held the record with 211. The result marked a positive start for Chandela, who has already won an Olympic quota place for the Rio Olympics. The silver and bronze went to Swedish shooters Astrid Steffensen (207.6) and Stine Nielsen (185.0). Chandela, seventh in the world rankings, has already qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics last year, having won the bronze in the 10m air rifle event in the World Cup (Rifle/Pistol) in Changwon, South Korea.

OBITUARY

12. Noted Gujarati writer Labshankar Thakar passes away

Sahitya Akademi Award winner Veteran Gujarati littérateur Labhshankar Thakar, also known by his pen name Punarvasu, has died after prolonged illness at the age of 80. Thakar was a modernist author of Gujarati literature with influence of existentialism challenging traditional literature styles. He was also an Ayurvedic Practitioner also. He had also received Kumar Chandrak, Narmad Chandrak and Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak. He was presented Sahitya Akademi award in 1991 for his poetry, Tolan Aawaz Ghunghat. He also received Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar from Gujarati Sahitya Parishad in 2002.

13. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed dead

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi. He was 79. The Mufti’s daughter and the president of his Peoples Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti, 56, is expected to take over as the first woman chief minister of the state. The PDP rules Jammu and Kashmir in partnership with the BJP. Mr Sayeed had been in hospital for two weeks and was being treated for a lung infection. He was put on ventilator support after his condition worsened.
