1. GOI constitutes Shyam Benegal Committee to revamp Central Board of Film Censors

Government of India has constituted a Committee headed by renowned film personality Shyam Benegal for Holistic interpretation of the provisions of the Cinematograph Act and Rules. The Board of film certification recently came under attack following the cuts imposed on long kisses between Spectre’s lead actors Daniel Craig and Monica Bellucci. The panel has been asked to submit its recommendations within two months on reshaping the censor board, officially known as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

2. President Pranab Mukherjee gives assent to 5 key bills

President Pranab Mukherjee gave nod to the Arbitration and Conciliation (Amendment) Act; the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act; the Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Act; The Atomic Energy (Amendment) Act; and the Payment of Bonus (Amendment) Act, 2015. The Atomic Energy (Amendment) Act will allow state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to have collaboration with other public sector undertakings in the nuclear field.

3. Recommendations of Justice Lodha Committee on BCCI reforms

The Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee has recommended sweeping reforms for the controversy-ridden BCCI, suggesting a bar on ministers from occupying positions, putting a cap on the age and tenure of the office-bearers and legalising betting. In a series of drastic reforms, the three-member panel, headed by Justice (Retd) R M Lodha, also suggested one unit should represent one state, while taking away the voting rights of institutional and city-based units. The committee also suggested the restructuring of the BCCI’s administrative set-up, proposing the position of a CEO accountable to a nine-member apex council.

4. Home Minister approves 33% women posts in CAPFs

With a view to enhancing representation of women in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the 33% posts at Constable level for being filled up by women. The 33% reservation of Constable level posts in CRPF & CISF and 14-15% posts at Constable level in border guarding forces i.e. BSF, SSB & ITBP will start immediately to begin with. The Committee on Empowerment of Women in its Sixth Report (Recommendation No.84) of the (2010-11) had recommended urgent need to provide due representation to women in paramilitary forces.

5. The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, 2015 notified

The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, 2015 was passed by the Parliament in the recently concluded Winter Session of the Parliament. The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act, 2015 received the assent of the President on the 26th December, 2015 and has been published in the Gazette of India, Extraordinary on 29th December, 2015. The provisions of the Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act, 2015 shall be deemed to have come into force on the 15th Day of June, 2015.

6. First Company of Ganga Task Force deployed Ganga Gram Yojana launched

The first company of Ganga Task force Battalion has been deployed at Garhmukteshwar to implement the Namami Gange Programme. Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Uma Bharti said that three such companies will be deployed soon at Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad. The Minister said the Jawans of the Ganga Task force will be deployed on the banks of the river Ganga to ensure that industry and civilians do not pollute the river.

7. Amputee mountaineer Arunima Sinha scales Mount Aconcagua in Argentina

Arunima Sinha, the amputee mountaineer who set a record by conquering Mount Everest, has added another feather to her cap by conquering Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. Arunima, in a statement, said she started her mission on the morning of December 12 and hoisted the Indian tricolour on December 25 at the summit. Aconcagua is the highest mountain outside Asia, at 6,960.8 metres.

Arunima lost her left leg in a train accident in 2011 and she surprised the world by scaling Mt. Everest on May 21, 2013.

8. World’s largest database for cancer drug discovery goes 3D

Scientists have revolutionised the world’s largest database for cancer drug discovery by adding 3D structures of faulty proteins and maps of cancer’s communication networks, paving the way for more effective treatments. The new version of canSAR database uses artificial intelligence to identify nooks and crannies on the surface of faulty cancer—causing molecules, as a key step in designing new drugs to block them.

The database has already collated billions of experimental measurements mapping the actions of one million drugs and chemicals on human proteins, and has combined these data with genetic information and results from clinical trials. It allows scientists to identify communication lines that can be intercepted within tumour cells, opening up potential new approaches for cancer treatment.

FOREIGN RELATIONS

9. India-Nepal friendship bus service resumes after gap of 27 years

A friendship bus service between India and Nepal via Champawat in Uttarakhand has been resumed after a gap of 27 years. These air-conditioned buses with free Wi-Fi facility, painted with Indian and Nepalese flags, will enter the Nepalese district of Kanchanpur at 6 a.m. everyday and start for Delhi, and return from there at 6 p.m., in-charge of Sharda barrage international police station.

No special documents are required to travel in these buses. The service was suspended 27 years ago in the wake of the Indo-Nepal Trade and Transit Treaty. Resumption of the service between the two countries was welcomed by locals on either side of the border as about 10,000 Nepalis travel in these buses daily from Kanchanpur district, Dandel Dhura, Voti, Sapen, Acham, Kalali, Jagbuddha and Siddhartha Nagar areas in Nepal.

10. NABARD inks pact with NRSC for web-based monitoring of projects

Country’s apex development bank, NABARD on Jan 4 signed a pact with National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) for web-based monitoring of its projects in four states. According to an official statement issued by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Indo-German Watershed Development ( IGWDP) projects (are located) in three states- Gujarat, Rajasthan and Telangana, and Nabard-assisted watershed projects under Watershed Development Fund

11. RK Mathur sworn in as 8th Chief Information Commissioner

Former defence secretary RK Mathur has sworn in as the eighth Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) by President Pranab Mukherjee at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led selection committee, which has Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, as its members, had last year on December 16 selected Mathur as the new CIC.

12. IAMAI appoints Freecharge founder Kunal Shah as chairman

Industry body the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has named Kunal Shah, co-founder and chief executive officer of FreeCharge as the new chairman of the association. Shah would replace current chairman Nishant Rao, who recently moved to Chennai from Gurgaon to join a startup called Freshdesk as its global Chief Operating Officer. Shah co-founded FreeCharge in August 2010. In April last year the company was acquired by Snapdeal. Post acquisition, FreeCharge continues to be an independent entity under Snapdeal.

OBITUARY

13. BJP MLA Raghunandan Mandal dies in Jharkhand

BJP MLA Raghunandan Mandal has died at Korka district at the age of 63. Mr Mandal complained of chest pain and died on way to hospital. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. He was a first-time MLA from Godda. Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu, Chief Minister Raghubar Das, former Chief Minister Arjun Munda and several other leaders condoled the death.

14. Former CJI SH Kapadia passes away

Former Chief Justice of India Sarosh Homi Kapadia, who delivered some landmark judgements, passed away due to cardiac arrest at the age of 68. He is survived by wife, son, who is a Chartered Accountant, and a daughter. Justice Kapadia’s funeral was held as per Parsi tradition this evening at ‘Tower of Silence’ at Kemps Corner, South Mumbai.
