ISRO teams up with Urban Development Ministry, to map 4,041 towns

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has tied up with the Union Urban Development Ministry for mapping over 500 towns and cities, to make a base plan for better planning and management. The project is expected to start by September 2015. The space agency will map and provide management plans for heritage sites and monuments of national importance. ISRO has diversified operations under Bhuvan Application Services like 1 meter satellite images for more than 300 cities in the country.

Points to Note
  • Bhuvan is ISRO’s software application which allows users to explore a 2D/3D representation of the surface of the Earth.
  • A beta version was launched on 12 August 2009.
  • Bhuvan is using a crowdsourcing approach to enrich its maps and collect point of interest data.
  • Apart from visualization Bhuvan provides timely disaster support services (domestic and international).
  • Ministry of Urban Development is the apex body for formulation and administration of the rules and regulations and laws relating to the housing and urban development in India.
