In a dramatic final at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Goa’s Fatorda, FC Chennaiyin defeated FC Goa 3-2 to be crowned Indian Super League (ISL) season 2 champions. The hosts were on the brink of winning the second edition of the league but an own goal from goalkeeper Kattimani and a 90th minute strike from Stiven Mendoza broke their heart and gave Chennaiyin FC their first ISL crown.
Colombian striker John Stiven Mendoza compensated for his missed penalty to score in the 90th minute and claim the victory in a fluctuating contest at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. He also became the highest goal-scorer of the eight-team football tournament with 12 goals. Chennaiyin’s offensive play revolved around Mendoza just as Goa’s was dependant on Leo Moura.
Elano Blumer, the captain of Chennaiyin FC, has been arrested by Goa police for allegedly assaulting FC Goa team co-owner Dattaraj Salgaoncar during the post-match celebrations.
