Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport was awarded the world’s number 1 position for best airport for the second consecutive year in the 25-40 million passenger category. The ranking was announced by the Airports Council International (ACI) for the 2015 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards. The management of the airport was passed over to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in May 2006. Before this it was operated by the Indian Air force.
IGIA is run by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a joint venture between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and GMR Group-led consortium which include Fraport and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.
Operated by the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the IGI Airport also stands ahead of all other Indian airports by winning maximum number of awards in 2015. The IGI Airport has also been conferred with two more prestigious awards The Best Airport by Size & Region Asia Pacific (25 – 40 MPPA), second Best Airport by Region Asia Pacific. In 2011, the airport had achieved the position of world’s number two, which it retained for three consecutive years till 2013. The IGI Airport handles 78 air traffic movements (ATM) per hour, the highest in India.
IGIA has a current strength of handling more than 40 million passengers. The airport has expanded over an area of 5,106 acres. IGI is the second busiest airport in terms of cargo traffic after Mumbai. By 2030, the airport authorities plan to increase its capacity and the airport will be able to host 100 million passengers.
