India’s First Grain ATM Launched in Odisha

On August 8, 2024, the Odisha government introduced its first Grain ATM, a new technology to enhance food distribution under the National Food Security Programme. This machine is part of the central government’s Annapurti program and was developed with support from the World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen food security in the region.

What is a Grain ATM?

A Grain ATM is an automated machine that dispenses food grains directly to people. The aim is to make food distribution more efficient and reduce hunger. These machines, used in several countries including India, minimize human intervention, which helps reduce corruption and ensures fair distribution. Grain ATMs were first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and use technology to streamline food delivery. Some even use biometric authentication for security and offer fortified grains to improve nutrition. The goal is to cut food waste and make the food supply chain more efficient.

Key Features of the Grain ATM

  • 24/7 Access: Available all day, every day, for people in Odisha to get food grains.
  • Universal Access: Anyone with a valid ration card from anywhere in India can use the ATM.
  • Fast Dispensing: Can provide up to 50 kilograms of grains in just five minutes with high accuracy.
  • Modular Design: Easy to assemble and set up in different locations.
  • Energy Efficiency: Uses energy efficiently and can be powered by solar panels for automatic refilling.

The introduction of the Grain ATM is a significant advancement in using technology to improve food distribution and ensure better nutritional security. Following a successful trial in Mancheswar, more machines are expected to be set up across Odisha. This initiative supports global goals for fair and effective food distribution and strengthens the state’s food security system.

About the National Food Security Act

The National Food Security Act (NFSA), passed in India in 2013, aims to provide affordable food grains to about two-thirds of the population. It covers 75% of rural and 50% of urban people, offering 5 kilograms of food grains per person each month. The Act also includes nutritional support for pregnant women and children, recognizing the right to food as a fundamental human right.

What is the Annapurti Initiative?

Launched by the Government of India in 2021, the Annapurti initiative focuses on improving access to healthy food. It aims to make food distribution more efficient and promote local food production to reduce dependence on external sources. The program supports local farmers, educates them about good nutrition, and encourages eco-friendly farming practices. It seeks to address hunger and malnutrition by enhancing the overall food supply chain.
