Indian Railways to launch mobile app for paperless ticketing

Indian Railways is going to launch a mobile app to book rail tickets in unreserved categories. By using this app, a passenger need not take a print out of the ticket and he can just show the soft copy on his mobile to the Ticket Examiner. This app will also reduce the long queues at the railways ticket counters.

According to the plan, people can download the app from the Google App store for Android-based mobile phones. Once the App is installed, the user will get a registration ID number for creation of a railway e-wallet. The e-wallet mobile payment system will have to be loaded with certain some of money via online or at a ticket counter at any station. Passengers can easily top-up the e-wallet at ticket counters or on the IRCTC website using a credit or debit card.

Other than booking tickets, this app also has features to renew the season tickets. This will help the commuters to a great extent. This app-based ticketing system was tried out in the Mumbai suburban sector on a pilot basis. The app will be available for mobile phones running on the Android operating systems from tomorrow (April 22′ 2015) and for Blackberry devices later.
