What is the Zorawar Light Tank?

Request for Information and Future Plans

In 2021, the Indian Army issued a request to acquire 350 light tanks, each weighing less than 25 tonnes. These tanks are essential for increasing the Army’s agility and combat ability in difficult terrains, especially in high-altitude regions. The India-China standoff in Eastern Ladakh highlighted the need for such vehicles. Initially, the Army did not prioritize light tanks, but growing military tensions, particularly during confrontations at the Kailash range, made it clear that these vehicles are vital for operations in mountainous areas.

Who was Zorawar Singh?

The Zorawar light tank is named after Zorawar Singh, a renowned Dogra general from the early 19th century. Born in 1786, he is famous for his successful military campaigns in Ladakh and Tibet, often in harsh and unforgiving conditions. His strategic brilliance earned him a lasting legacy as a courageous leader. He died in 1841 during a campaign in Tibet, symbolizing the challenges he faced in leading troops through some of the world’s most difficult terrains, much like the modern tank named in his honor.
