World-wide, India ranks at the 13th position in generating electricity from nuclear source. The report has been published by Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). According to the report, India’s nuclear power capacity may increase from 5,780 MW to 10,080 MW by 2019. Totally there are thirty one countries in the world including India which generate electricity from nuclear source. India ranks at 7th position in terms of number of reactors in operation country-wise globally.
The Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh said that more nuclear power projects based both on indigenous technologies and with international cooperation are planned in future. The total requirement of nuclear fuel i.e. natural uranium is over 5 five years is estimated to be around 5,940 tons.
The Minister has dismissed the reports suggesting that GOI is buying nuclear reactors without site studies. He said the sites for locating nuclear power plants are selected after detailed scientific evaluation in accordance with the criteria laid down in the atomic energy regulatory board code of practice.
