India Assumes ADPC Chairmanship for 2024-25

India will assume leadership of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) from 2024 to 2025, taking over from China on July 25, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand. This marks a significant advancement in India’s efforts toward disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate resilience.

Significance of India’s Leadership

India’s new role highlights its growing importance in global and regional disaster management efforts. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country’s commitment to DRR has strengthened, positioning India as a key player in this field.

The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)

Founded by Prime Minister Modi, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) is crucial for building infrastructure that can withstand disasters. This initiative reflects India’s leadership in enhancing community resilience against natural calamities.

About the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC)

  • Capacity Building and Training: The ADPC supports 14 Asian countries in improving their disaster preparedness through a variety of training and capacity-building programs. These programs aim to equip local governments, communities, and organizations with the skills and knowledge needed to manage and reduce disaster risks.
  • Technological Integration and Early Warning Systems: The ADPC promotes the use of technology to enhance early warning systems, ensuring that accurate and timely information is available during emergencies. This technological integration helps communities and authorities respond more effectively, reducing the impact of disasters.
  • Regional Cooperation and Community-Based Preparation: The ADPC emphasizes community-based disaster preparedness through partnerships with NGOs and government agencies. It also organizes the Asian Conference on Disaster Reduction to foster regional collaboration and knowledge sharing. The center’s publications offer valuable insights into best practices for disaster management, improving overall preparedness and response.

Leadership Transition

Shri Rajendra Singh, a prominent figure in the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has been appointed Chair of the ADPC for the 2024–25 term. This leadership change will drive India’s strategic efforts to enhance disaster readiness across the region.

5th Board of Trustee Meeting

On July 25, 2024, India hosted the 5th Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting of the ADPC. During this meeting, India reaffirmed its commitment to the Center’s objectives and to fostering cooperation among member states to advance disaster risk management.
