Amazing Strength Against Poverty Among the Elderly

Jammu and Kashmir stand out as an area that does a great job of keeping its elderly population out of poverty—only 4.2% of its elderly population lives below the poverty line.

When it comes to people over 60, who make up 9.4 percent of the region’s population, Jammu Kashmir has the best life expectancy. Life expectancy for men is 20.3% and for women it’s 23.0%, making it the top country in this demographic measure from 2015 to 2019.

Findings from the LASI Survey: Figuring Out How People Use It

The results of the LASI poll shed light on how older people in India, including those in Jammu and Kashmir, use assistive devices.

Even though these kinds of tools are available, only 44% of older people use them. Interestingly, the most common devices are glasses (85.2%) and walking sticks (18.9%). This shows a connection with age, living in a city, being in the highest income quintile, and level of schooling.

Getting a Better Look at Mental Health: Problems and Fears

Concerns about the mental health of older people are talked about in the India Aging Report 2023. The results show that 15% of people in Jammu and Kashmir aged 60 and up have a total cognition score that is below the 10th percentile.

Also, almost 30% show signs of depression. Mental health problems are linked to several things, such as level of schooling, age, gender, place of residence, widowhood, living situation, and employment status.
