Hindutva leader Himani Savarkar passed away

Noted pro-Hindutva leader and former president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha Himani Savarkar died here after prolonged illness. The leader passed away Sunday night. She was 67. Savarkar, who was in the forefront of many Hindutva movements, was daughter-in-law of Narayan Savarkar, brother of freedom fighter Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

She played an active role in the organisations — Hindu Mahsabha and Abhinav Bharat — set up by Swatantryaveer Savarkar. She had also contested 2004 Lok Sabha and 2009 Maharashtra Assembly elections from Pune.

Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha
  • The Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha (All-India Hindu Assembly) is a Hindu nationalist political party in India.
  • The organisation was formed to protect the rights of the Hindu community in British India, after the formation of the All India Muslim League in 1906 and the British India government’s creation of separate Muslim electorate under the Morley-Minto reforms of 1909.
  • Although the oldest Hindu nationalist political party, the Hindu Mahasabha has remained marginal in its influence on Indian politics, both before and after independence.
