Gujarat first state to make compulsory voting in local body polls

Gujarat has become the first Indian state to introduce compulsory voting for local body elections. The state government had issued a notification on the amended Gujarat Local Authorities Laws (Amendment) Act,2009, approved by Governor last year. According to new Act, registered voters who do not cast their votes and fail to produce any valid reason are liable for punishment. The state government has also notified the ordinance which makes voting compulsory for elected representatives as well. The bill was initially introduced when Prime minster Narendra Modi was Chief Minister of Gujarat.
