Gujarat Claims The Title Of India’s Petro Capital

With a state-of-the-art petrochemical complex and the largest grassroots oil refinery in the world, Gujarat has become the petrochemical powerhouse of the country.

Reliance Industries Ltd.’s (RIL) Jamnagar refinery and ONGC Petro additions Limited’s (OPaL) Dahej petrochemical complex are two prime examples of Gujarat’s booming petrochemical industry.

The Refinery at Jamnagar:

  • The Jamnagar refinery, owned by RIL, is evidence of Gujarat’s excellence in the petrochemical sector.
  • At 1.4 million barrels per day (MMBPD), the Jamnagar facility processes crude oil impressively, earning it the title of largest and most complicated single-site refinery in the world.
  • Jamnagar has become the new standard for refinery infrastructure, housing some of the world’s largest units such as the fluidized catalytic cracker, coker, alkylation, paraxylene, polypropylene, refinery off-gas cracker, and petcoke gasification plants.

Exciting Gujarat International Summit:

  • The petrochemical industry in Gujarat has reached new heights thanks in large part to the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS).
  • Notable memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were inked during the 2019 and 2022 editions, respectively, with amounts of Rs 3,000 crore and Rs 7,000 crore for chemical manufacture in Dahej, respectively.
  • With its subject of “Gateway to the Future,” the next 10th VGGS is expected to attract even more participants and encourage even more partnerships in the petrochemical industry.

With respect to OPaL

A private joint venture, ONGC Petro additions Limited (OPaL) was formed in 2006 with 26% ownership by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and 5% ownership by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC).

At 5 square kilometers in size, OPaL is one of the biggest integrated petrochemical complexes in South Asia. Utilizing technology from Linde AG, Germany, it is home to the nation’s first and one of the largest Dual Feed Cracker Units (DFCU).
