Government of India launches FAME-India Scheme

The Government of India has launched a scheme called FAME-India to promote the eco-friendly vehicles by offering incentives on electric and hybrid vehicles. FAME stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles. The scheme is a part of the National Mission for Electric Mobility. FAME-India envisages allocating 795 crore rupees support till 2020 for the manufacturing and sale of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Union Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete said that the scheme will be initially launched in metropolitan cities followed by smart cities and finally in all major cities of India. The heavy industries ministry has estimated a total requirement of about Rs 14,000 crore for FAME-India scheme. The government has planned to implement the scheme in multiple phases with fund allocations of 260 crore rupees and 535 crore rupees for the first two years respectively.

The scheme will have four focus areas.

  1. Technology development
  2. Demand creation
  3. Pilot projects
  4. Charging infrastructure.

The Department of Heavy Industries will be nodal department for the scheme.
