GOI launches School Nursery Yojana

The Government of India has launched a new scheme called School Nursery Yojana. The scheme involves school children in raising saplings in nurseries created inside their school campuses. The main objective of this scheme is to plant a tree for sustainable future and to make the nation clean and green. Under this ambitious Yojana, students will sow the seeds, grow saplings in the school nursery, as part of practical exercise for Biology classes and extra-curricular activities for students of other streams. The students will also carry out a tree census in their school and the locality.

Ten thousands schools will be covered across the country under the scheme in next three years. The selected schools will receive grant of Rs 25,000 in the first year and Rs 10,000 per year for the subsequent two years. The state forest departments will guide and provide technical support to schools under the scheme. Each School Nursery is expected to create a 1,000 saplings every year.

The scheme was launched by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi.  Around 5, 000 saplings were distributed to school students on the occasion.
