Former President APJ Abdul Kalam passes away

Former President APJ Abdul Kalam has passed away at the age of 84 due to heart attack. He was addressing the students of IIM Shillong and collapsed during his speech. Abdul Kalam was the 11th President on India from 2002 to 2007. He was elected the President of India in 2002 with the support of the both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Indian National Congress.

Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on 15 October 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu and studied physics and aerospace engineering.

Kalam came from a poor background and started working at an early age to supplement his family’s income by distributing newspapers.

He spent four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

He was referred as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.

He also played a pivotal organizational, technical and political role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.
