Former DRDO DG Dr Avinash Chander conferred Aryabhata Award

Dr Avinash Chander, Former Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and ex-DRDO chief, has received the prestigious Astronautical Society of India’s Aryabhata Award. He received the award from Dr R Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to Government of India, and Dr AS Kiran Kumar, Chairman ISRO, at ASI-ISRO Awards function held at Space Applications Centre (SAC) in Ahmedabad.

The Aryabhata Award, named after the fifth century Indian astronomer and mathematician and also in commemoration of the first Indian Satellite, Aryabhata, is presented annually to an individual for outstanding lifetime contribution to the promotion of astronautics in India.

BHVS Narayana Murthy, Associate Director, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, was awarded “ASI award for meritorious service in Rocket & Related Technologies”. He was chosen for his contributions in design, development and production of onboard computers, missile launch processor, dual redundant navigation systems, real-time mission software.

Avinash Chander

  • Avinash Chander was the chief architect of India’s strategic Agni series of ballistic missile systems.
  • He had joined DRDO after completing graduation in Electrical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1972 and retired in 2015 after completion of 42 years of distinguished service.
  • He had served as DG of DRDO from 2013 to 2015. He also had served as Scientific Adviser to the Union Defence Minister.
  • He was awarded Padma Shri, AGNI Self-Reliance Award (1999), Dr. Biren Roy Space Science Award (2000), DRDO Award (2007), DRDO Technology Leadership Award, (2008).
