Tamil Film Kanavu Variyam wins REMI Award

Kanavu Variyam, a Tamil movie directed by a Chennai-based techie Arun Chidambaram, has gone on to win the prestigious Remi Award in the US. The award will be handed over to Chidambaram during the 49th WorldFest Houston International Film Festival, where the movie will have its world premiere. Chidambaram, who earlier worked with a multi-national company in the US abandoned his lucrative job to follow his passion – movies. According to him, the film is about the most familiar problem faced by people in Tamil Nadu: incessant power cuts. Other than the Remi Award, the movie also won the Special Jury Award at the National Science Festival.

Six Indian Americans to be awarded the Presidential Early Career award

US President Barack Obama to honour six Indian Americans, who have made to the list of 106 scientists and engineers, with the highest US government prize for young independent researchers. The Indian Americans selected for the Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers are Milind Kulkarni (Purdue University), Kiran Musunuru (Harvard University), Sachin Patel (Vanderbilt University Medical Centre), Vikram Shyam (NASA), Rahul Mangharam (University of Pennsylvania) and Shwetak Patel (University of Washington).

APPOINTMENTS

Vinay Kumar Singh appointed as MD of NCRTC

Railway officer Vinay Kumar Singh has been chosen for appointment as Managing Director of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). The NCRTC is the implementing agency for the three corridors of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in the NCR zone. A total of about 30 senior officials in the government had shown interest for the post of MD of the newly-formed NCRTC, about 15 were interviewed by the search and selection committee for the job.

WB Govt plans to get GI Tag for Four Traditional Bengali Sweets

The West Bengal government is planning to get Geographical Identification (GI) tag for four traditional sweetmeat delicacies of the state with a view to protect them from imitations and for exporting them in future. The four sweetmeats for which GI tags are being sought are ‘Moa’ of Jainagar, ‘Sarpuria’ of Krishnagar, and ‘Sitabhog’ and ‘Mihidana’ of Burdwan. While ‘Jainagar-er moa’ is made of puffed rice and date palm jaggery at Jainagar in South 24 Parganas district, Krishnagar of Nadia district is famous for ‘Sarpuria’ which is made ofmilk cream. ‘Sitabhog’ and ‘Mihidana’ are rice based sweets of Burdwan.

‘Swachh Paryatan Mobile App’ Launched

The Ministry of Tourism in co-ordination with Ministry of Culture has launched the Swachh Paryatan mobile app. The objective is to increase citizens’ participation in the protection and upkeep of heritage monuments in India. The app, which is available on Android Phones, will also be soon available on Apple and Microsoft as well. It shall be monitored by the Project Monitoring Unit of Swachh Bharat Mission in Ministry of Tourism. Initially, 25 Adarsh Smarak Monuments such as Red Fort, Taj Mahal, Elephanta Caves, Qutub Minar Complex, among others, have been identified for inclusion in the app, but it would be scaled up to include more monuments as the campaign expands.

Airtel rolls out LTE-Advanced network in Kerala

Telecom major Bharti Airtel has started delivering 4G mobile broadband speed of up to 135 megabits per second in Kerala. Airtel has pioneered 4G deployment in India. To deliver this high speed, Airtel said that it has used carrier aggregation across TD LTE and LTE FDD on a LIVE 4G network, becoming the first mobile operator in India to commercially deploy LTE-Advanced (4G+) technology. With this, Airtel has joined a select group of global mobile operators to commercially deploy the technology that delivers ultra-fast mobile data speeds and enables better spectrum utilization and efficiency.

Salesforce acquires machine learning startup

Salesforce has acquired PredictionIO, a startup with general-purpose open source machine learning software. Salesforce plans to use some of the tech to build out Salesforce’s own machine learning capabilities as part of SalesforceIQ, both in-house as well as in products for Salesforce customers. PredictionIO’s CEO and co-founder Simon Chan noted that the startup’s team — which includes other co-founders Donald Szeto, Kenneth Chan and Thomas Stone — will be joining Salesforce after the transaction closes.

Punjab Warriors clinch HIL title

Jaypee Punjab Warriors was crowned Hockey India League (HIL) champions as they clinched their maiden title after thrashing Kalinga Lancers 6-1 in a lop-sided summit clash. The Punjab-based side were third time lucky as they had finished runners-up in the last two editions. They lost to Delhi Waveriders in 2014 and to Ranchi Rays last year. The Warriors, who had finished second in the round-robin league phase, totally dominated the final match of the fourth edition of the tournament at the Astroturf Hockey Stadium.

Former French Open champion Schiavone wins Rio title

Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone won her first title since 2013 when she defeated Shelby Rogers of the United States 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the Rio de Janeiro final. The Italian former world number four, now ranked at 132, came back from a set and a break down to defeat her 23-year-old opponent and claim her seventh career title. Schiavone is the third Italian winner on the WTA Tour this year after Roberta Vinci in St Petersburg and Sara Errani in Dubai. This victory guarantees a return to the world top 100 next week for the veteran who is in her third decade on tour.
