Vidya Balan receives Pride of Kerala award

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan received the Pride of Kerala Award from the World Malayalee Council and Kairali TV.  The 38-year-old “Kahaani” actress, who hails from Kerala”, took to Twitter to share her joy on receiving the prestigious honour.

Proud to have received the Pride of Kerala award from the World Malayalee Council and Kairali TV,” Balan posted on alongside a photo from the felicitation ceremony.

The National award-winning actress has starred in films like “Parineeta”, “Paa”, “No One Killed Jessica”, “The Dirty Picture” and “Kahaani”. Balan will be next seen in Sujoy Ghosh-produced “TE3N”, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. She is also part of the sequel of “Kahaani”.

Tamar Hahn – Director of United Nations Information Centre

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Tamar Hahn of Israel Director of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Buenos Aires, which serves Argentina and Uruguay.  She assumes her duties on 10 February. Prior to this appointment, Ms. Hahn was the Regional Adviser for Resource Mobilization and Partnerships at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Panama City, Panama, since 2013.

Piruz Khambatta named ambassador for Make in India

Rasna chairman Piruz Khambatta has been named ambassador of the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative by the Government of India. Rasna said it will support entrepreneurs who wish to come up with turnkey plant to manufacture food products which it would market under its own brand on a contract manufacturing basis, in addition to fostering and mentoring startups as part of the Make in India initiatives.

Railway opts for online fuel management system

Indian Railway is firming up a proposal to develop an online fuel management system, a first of its kind for the national transporter, to check pilferage and bring transparency in fuel consumption. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu is likely to announce the fuel management system in the Rail Budget 2016-17 on February 25, indicating the expansion of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) basket in the public sector behemoth.

Prabhu has laid emphasis on maximum use of Information Technology in the railways and this will reflect in his second Rail Budget this year.

Banaras Hindu University turns 100 years

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) founded by Freedom fighter Pt Madan Mohan Malviya has turned 100 years on 13th February 2016. BHU was founded as important seat of higher education in 1916. During time of its establishment it was first university in India that was the result of a private individual’s efforts. After its formation, BHU had played an important role in the freedom movement of India. It main purpose was to build a bridge between India’s past and modernising world system in the areas of social sciences, humanities particularly in evolving non colonial history as a discipline.

India and Sweden decide to step up ties

India and Sweden have resolved to scale up bilateral relations and expressed their commitment to a transparent, fair and predictable global trade regime under the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The prime ministers of the two nations have “agreed to scale up bilateral relations and committed to a close bilateral dialogue at all levels”.

The two leaders also underlined the need to tap full potential of the EU-India strategic partnership and welcomed the prospect of resumption of talks on the India-EU Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement.

YouTube acquires BandPage for $8 million

BandPage has been acquired by Google owned YouTube for a reported $8 million. That’s far less than the $27.6 million raised by the startup since launching in 2009. BandPage is already heavily integrates into both YouTube and Google, delivering photos and band info for more than 500,000 artists, along  with direct to fan offerings from hundreds of musicians.

Founded in 2009, BandPage began as an app that let musicians create a special Music tab on their Facebook Page. But after Facebook shut down these Page apps in 2012, it lost 90% of its traffic in three months. It went from 32 million monthly users and being the second most popular Facebook developer behind Zynga, to just a few million.

MyShake App to detect earthquake launched in Android

University of California, Berkeley scientists have developed an Android app that can detect earthquakes using smartphones. Called MyShake, it is available in the Google Play Store. The app intends to collate user data in order to determine the magnitude of earthquakes and issue alerts to potential victims in and around affected areas. The scientists have designed the app in such a way that it can analyse various levels of vibrations picked up by a smartphone’s inbuilt accelerometer to determine the size and threat of earthquakes.

OBITUARY

US SC Justice Antonin Scalia passes away

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the leading conservative voice on the high court, has died at the age of 79. He died of apparent natural causes, in his sleep after a day of quail hunting outside El Paso, Texas. He was staying at a private residence in the Big Bend area of South Texas. He was found dead Saturday morning when he did not appear for breakfast. Scalia, the longest-serving justice on the Supreme Court, taught at the University of Chicago from 1977 to 1982. He was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan.

Renowned poet ONV Kurup passes away

Renowned Malayalam poet and lyricist ONV Kurup passed away at a private hospital at the age of 84. Kurup was suffering from age-related ailments and leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.

A professor of repute who served in many colleges, ONV – as he was popularly known – was the face of the Malayalam cultural world through his works which fetched him the country’s highest literary honour, the Jnanpith Award, in 2007. A recipient of the Padma Shri and the Padma Vibhushan, besides numerous other literary awards, O N V also has national film awards and 13 state film awards to his credit for his lyrics.

Soviet football legend Anatoli Ilyin passes away

Soviet football legend Anatoly Ilyin died at the age of 84 here Striker Ilyin was capped 31 times by the then Soviet Russia (the USSR) between 1952-59 and scored 16 goals. He played for the Spartak Moscow club for the majority of his professional career (1949-1962). Ilyin scored the winning goal to help Russia claim gold in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics against Yugoslavia in a 1-0 victory. He also participated in the 1958 World Cup.

He won the Soviet Top League with his club five times (1952, 1953, 1956, 1958 and 1962) and the Soviet Cup in 1958. He was the league’s top scorer twice, in 1954 (11 goals) and 1958 (20 goals).

Pakistan Cricket umpire Asad Rauf banned for 5 years

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has banned Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf for five years after its disciplinary committee found him guilty of corrupt practices. The BCCI Committee has found Rauf guilty of misconduct and corruption under multiple statutes of its BCCI Anti-Corruption Code. He was accused of accepting expensive gifts from bookies besides placing bets on IPL matches in the 2013 edition.
