Every Household in Delhi to pay Environmental Compensation : NGT

The National Green Tribunal has put an order to every household in Delhi to pay Environmental Compensation every month for cleaner Yamuna. The payment is for all households irrespective of having a sewage connection. This order is applicable for unauthorized colonies too.

The compensation to be paid would be directly proportional to the property or water tax, whichever is higher, paid by a particular household. In case of households in unauthorised colonies which do not pay property tax or water bill, the amount would be Rs. 100 to Rs. 500.

The collected amount will be utilized to provide new sewage treatment plants (STPs) and other requirements as part of the NGT’s “Maili se Nirmal Yamuna Revitalisation Project 2017”.

In the first phase, the National Green Tribunal has taken two major polluting drains — Najafgarh and Delhi Gate drains.  It is expected to cost Rs 3,659 crore. The NGT said that more than 76 per cent of pollutants of Yamuna river is generated in NCT Delhi. Industrial effluents and untreated sewage are the major pollutants.
