Eminent Economist Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri passes away

Eminent economist and academics Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri passed away on 20 May 2015 in Pune, Mahrashtra. He was 81.

Chaudhuri who also served as the policy advisor to the previous UPA government was known for providing valuable policy inputs to the Indian planning process and the economy as a whole through his research papers. He also was known for authoring a research paper on challenges of economic reform in the context of both State and market failures in 1990, just before the collapse of the erstwhile Soviet Union and India’s lurch towards globalization.

About Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri

  1. He served as the Director of the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) in New Delhi.
  2. He was also a visiting professor of economics at the Universities of Harvard and Minnesota in USA.
  3. He studied with Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen at Shantiniketan in West Bengal.
  4. He furthered his education at Kolkata’s Presidency College before completing his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of USA, where he studied modern economics under the eminent economist Paul Samuelson.
  5. He was conferred with the Padma Bushan in 2005 by the government for his contributions in the field of Trade and Industry.
