Former Gujarat cadre IAS officer Devender Kumar Sikri has been appointed as the Chairman of fair-trade regulator Competition Commission of India (CCI). Sikri will succeed Ashok Chawla as the Chairman of Competition Commission of India (CCI). Chawla was appointed as the Chairman of Competition Commission of India (CCI) on October 20, 2011. His tenure as Chairman of CCI has ended in January 2016.
About Sikri
- On July 31, 2013 Devender Kumar Sikri retired as Secretary in Department of Justice under Ministry of Law and Justice.
- He also served as the Secretary in Ministry of Women and Child development.
- He served as the Collector of Jamnagar and Rajkot. Devender Kumar Sikri also served as the Registrar General of Census.
Competition Commission of India
- The Competition Commission of India (CCI) was established in March 2009.
- The objective of CCI is to promote a healthy competition in market and to ensure freedom of trade in Indian market.
- The CCI oversees the implementation of the Competition Act, 2002, as amended by the Competition (Amendment) Act, 2007.
- The Competition (Amendment) Act, 2007 prohibits anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position by enterprises and regulates combinations (acquisition, acquiring of control and M&A), which causes or likely to cause an appreciable adverse effect on competition within India.
